Memorial cobblestone gateway planned at Metacom Avenue

Work began yesterday on a cobblestone memorial gateway at the entrance of McKenzie Avenue on Metacom Avenue. A force of masons under contractor Rennie Guevge mont is building it to honor Civil War soldiers and sailors, funded by Rhode Island Woman's Relief Corps donations. Donor cards list names and service records will be kept at the Soldiers' Home, with dedication planned for next Sunday and expected large attendance.

Fifth District Court Fines Man for Possessing Moonshine

Manuel Mattoas alias Manuel Marshall of Magnolia Street pleaded guilty to illegal possession of intoxicating liquor in the Fifth District Court before Judge Frank H Hammill. He was fined 50 dollars plus costs. Chief Hugh F Kelley recommended clemency, noting it was his first offense. Kelley, while seeking stolen cloth, found a still at Mattens home with moonshine and mash, which he destroyed.
