Burke accuses Hastings of bribes and cruelty in trial fury
The Speaker recounts Burke’s speech during Hastings trial recitation. He accuses Hastings of taking bribes, including from a Rajah, and of tolerating corruption in Bengal. Witnesses attest to his character, then Burke vows two charges: bribes and incitement of others to graft. He pleads for justice for Bengal natives as tremors of mercy sweep the court.
