Reports on postmaster appointment, school changes, and local incidents including a runaway and a charity of groceries.
Elmwood 4H clubs staged a standout exhibit with pigs and calves as the best Peoria County ever seen. Virginia Jones won grand champion baby beef with an 859 pound Hereford, her brother Billy earned reserve on a 1100 pound Shorthorn, and numerous local youths placed in various Daroc Jersey, Chester White, Angus, and dairy categories.
Pupils who arrive before the 8 30 am bell or 12 45 pm bell must not remain on school grounds unless directed by a teacher. After 4 30 pm dismissal, all pupils should leave the building and grounds. Play after 4 30 pm is not supervised. Grade School Enrollment.

Shane Items Donald Welch rides a new bike to school this fall. La Verne Lauderbach met with Joan Miller last Friday. T. V. Johnson of Peoria visited his niece Mrs. Henry Kellstadt returning home Saturday. Mr and Mrs Clifford Johnson and daughters Nancy Ann and Mary Lou from Peoria visited Mr and Mrs B Helistadt Monday evening. Mr and Mrs Wm Laughlin and son William with Betty visited the Henry Kelistadt family Saturday in Danville Iowa.
Laura Items Cecil Mitchell of Monica visited with Maurice King for a few days. Several couples and individuals, including Mr. and Mrs. W.G Gombs and the Dunivants, vacation plans and visits to Peoria, Victoria, and Texas were noted. Funeral attendees for Raymond Miller were listed among local names.
An Important Week calls all citizens to observe Fire Prevention Week from October 8 to 14. The effort, backed by insurance groups, fire departments, officials, newspapers, radio, and clubs, aims to teach how fires start, spread, and are fought, and how to inspect homes for hazards to save lives and property.
Sixty one descendants of the Catton families gathered at Jubilee State park on Sunday September 3. Officers for next year were elected with Fred Catton as president Lena Meehan as vice president Melva Wilson as secretary treasurer. The group will meet again at Chautauqua Park in Kewanee on the first Sunday in September.
The sixteenth annual Maher clan reunion gathered Monday at Silver Leaf with a hearty dinner. Officers elected for the coming year include Clarence Maher as president, Robert Carroll as vice president, Alice Dawson as secretary-treasurer, Sara Maher as historian, and chair and committee roles shared among M E Maher Irene Carroll Jack Maher and Phil Maher.
Announcement of the August 21, 1939 marriage of Miss Kathryn Christian to Howard Warfield in Oskaloosa Iowa. Couple traveled to northern Minnesota, now reside at 206 East Virginia Peoria. Mrs Warfield a Dayton Keith credit manager, Mr Warfield works at Moser's shoe store. Mrs Warfield from Brimfield and a Peoria High School graduate.
At noon on Monday August 28 Rev Glyde Record united Misa Pauline Olson and Raymond Windish in marriage at the bride’s Rapatee home in the presence of two families. Following luncheon the couple left for a trip to Denver Colorado and will reside near Farmington where Windish works at the Middle Grove strip mine.
A film night at the park presents Border Patrolman a George OBrien and Polly Ann Young western set in the southwest. The screening features a rugged sheriff tale with frontier action and a romantic subplot.
Caldwell reunion scheduled for Sunday September 10 at Jubilee College State Park. Sasket dinner to be served at noon.
Employment is rising steadily, likely lower unemployment than since 1933. Construction stays strong with home building dominating but expected slackening. Agriculture shows spotty gains but overall farmer income should be relatively good this year. A general war could abruptly alter the outlook and render the future unpredictable.
Peoria County Farm Bureau teams earned top results at the Illinois Farm Sports Festival at the University of Illinois last weekend. Ray Johnson and Robert Lutay pitched for the men, Buck Jones caught, Peoria girls took third, Princeville boys 4 team edged in 7 to 6, DeKalb beat the men 8 to 7, Otis Kiesow won hog calling, his wife placed in paddle tennis, Mrs Kiesow took slippers, Eddie and Walter Doubet placed in horseshoes, See Wason or Cramer took checkers, about 125 Peoria County residents attended.
