Annual Home Bureau Meeting Draws Crowd

The sixth annual Peoria County Home Bureau meeting was held at the YWCA in Peoria on June 18. Brimfield Unit had eighteen members present and the program featured Misa Mary Louise Chase and attorney Estelle Harmel Wilkins. County president Floyd Seltzer described her Washington trip. Brimfield tied with Kickapoo for fourth in unit points. Minnie Laws has not missed a meeting in six years. Tickets for the July 10 cantata The Barreat may be bought from unit members.

New Barrier For Chinch Bugs

Peoria County Farm Bureau touts a cheaper barrier using tar felt paper strips buried half their width in soil to combat chinch bugs. Strips are creosoted and set with dirt packed against them. creosote is applied every few days. A quarter mile costs about two dollars in material. creosote supply offered at cost. Warm dry weather spreads damage from chinch bugs across Peoria County wheat oats and nearby corn fields.

Twenty Two Minute Commute Hero Jim Jones

Jim Jones drives twenty miles from his country home to the city office in about twenty two minutes, shaving thirteen minutes off a typical trip. He occasionally speeds or weaves and has a minor accident paid by insurance, but remains confident and boasts of his record, a common tale among drivers nationwide.

Kickapoo Team Takes Win Over Cramer In 12-11 Affair

Kickapoo Farm Bureau base ball team edged Cramer 12 to 11 Saturday. Cramer had 11 runs on 11 hits with 3 errors while Kickapoo totaled 12 runs, 17 hits, and 3 errors. Pitchers Coyle and McCoy for Kickapoo, McDonald and Akin for Cramer. Next game June 27 at Cambridge against Henry County at 2 30 p.m.

Mrs. Frank Slayton Injured In Crash Near Home

Mrs. Frank Slayton is hospitalized in Galesburg after a Sunday morning accident near relatives’ home. She suffers three broken ribs and a cut near her temple. The Hoyt family, including Mrs Glenn Hoyt and Ruth Ann, were traveling in the other car which also sustained heavy damage.

Laura Winners 4-H Club Plans Judging and Ice Cream Stand

Laura Winners 4-H Club met June 19 at the Emil Lauber home with Emma Jaques presiding. Plans set for judging at Kellogg and German homes on June 25, with cattle, hogs at Kellogg’s and horses and sheep at Ben German’s. The group also planned an ice cream stand for the Elmore Centennial. Bernard Cluskey named chair. Members shared Urbana 4-H tour notes and a social game followed. Destination visitors included Charles Heinz of Chicago and cousins Mia Joe Heinz and Fay Heinz visiting Ben German.

First Gift Night Draws Good Crowd

A large crowd gathered Saturday for the first merchant gift night and a Saturday night concert. The band under Fred Meennis delivered good music while merchants offered quality merchandise at low prices. Twenty five dollars in free merchandise is given away each week, making Brimfield a popular spot.

Hanson Barns Fire Destroys Farm Buildings Near Kickapoo

A fire on the Hanson farm southwest of Kickapoo destroyed the cow barn and threatened all farm buildings. Brimfield fire engine responded and remained on the scene until late Tuesday afternoon.

Elmwood Man Killed In Accident

Elmwood resident Rollo Worley known as Happy was killed near the Harry Macey home Wednesday morning when his car likely struck by a Sinclair oil truck as he turned into the lane while painting. The cause remains undetermined as this edition goes to press.

June Weddings Goetze Ekena in Brimfield Ceremony

On June 2 1936 at Reverend Henry Traubin's Brimfield home Mary Marguerite Goetze and Arthur Ralph Ekena exchanged marriage vows. Rev Traub officiated with Chester Goetze and Frances Ekena as attendants. A reception followed at Anne Goetze's home. The couple reside with the groom's parents on the farm southeast of town.

Zahner daughter Misa Alivera Zahner and Keith Cecil wed at 7 PM on Saturday June 20 1936 in Peoria with Rev. E T Munos officiating. Attending guests included Mr and Mrs Ross Porter of Peoria. Elizabeth Johnson daughter of D. H. Miss Thelma Smith daughter of Mr and Mrs Verne Smith of Oak Hill and George Cowley of Elmwood married in Peoria last Thursday June 18 They left at once for a short honeymoon then will reside in Elmwood.

Nancy Harker Leaves For New Position

Miss Nancy Harker departed Sunday for Milwaukee to assume a new role as anaesthetist in a Milwaukee hospital. A Proctor Hospital Training School graduate, she studied anaesthesia and has worked at Proctor since completing the course. A friend, Miss Arntzen, accompanied her and will settle there. Norma Efnor of Cuba is visiting local friends this week. Mrs. George Lafollett and Mrs. J. W. Horder are visiting Mrs. D. G. Shirley at Aledo this week.
