Hundreds of Bridgeport renters look for October 1 relocations as rents jump from five to twenty dollars monthly. Landlords cite high costs, and buyers report North Side houses selling for up to 13 5000, with builders saying two family homes cannot be built for less than 10 000. Some tenants are faced with bidding for scarce vacancies.
Chicago officials investigate a Northbound Illinois Central New Orleans Limited robbery by two masked men who seized a mail car near Riverdale and escaped with a sum estimated between a few thousand and 100000 dollars. Investigators pursue links to Horace Walton who allegedly robbed a train last May.
Patrolman George A. Fitzgerald of the Wrrrat Precinct died at his home on Cedar Street at 2 oclock this morning after a long service on the force since June 1, 1916. He was commended for bravery in a 173 Church Street fire and was awarded a star. The police force mourns as Superintendent Wanagan visited his home and a funeral procession was planned for Thursday.
Over 4 000 women have registered at City Hall General Registrars office and about 1 500 men on the To Be Made lists this year. Registrars White and Simmons expect about 8 000 women this year, far below the 20 000 projected. The office is open daily until October 4 from 9 am to 5 pm and evenings 7 to 9.
John A. Cornell reports a vigorous house to house canvass to register women voters with encouraging results. At Misa Lombard’s Fifth district meeting 80 women attended and 21 were elected captains to lead teams enrolling more women.
Dispatches from the front report Polish forces defeating Lithuanian troops near Suwalki and the Grodno Vilna railway. Poland accuses Lithuania of starting hostilities. The Poles allegedly captured Sejny and Lopowie, took 1,000 prisoners, two batteries of field artillery, one battery of heavy guns and 26 machine guns.
The first case tried in the Oxy court for violation of the Volstead Act was heard this morning. John Economore, who operates a restaurant at 44 Railroad Avenue, was arrested and charged with liquor in his business on September 17 when Captain O Connell and Lieutenant Prout of the First Precinct searched the place and found a quart of "head" stored in the ice box. Judge Wilde imposed a flat fine of 35 dollars on Economore. The arrest on September 17 was the first arrest made by local police for alleged Volstead Act violations. previous arrests were by Federal agents.
The notice urges the finder to bring or mail the identification of the person in question to the Times Office. The first correct identification under the rules will receive a payment.
Simeon E. Pease high sheriff of Fairfield County, farmer and peach grower, was identified by a profile picture. J. H. Cook of 94 Sanford Avenue found the solution first at 3 04 p m yesterday among a list of others including Robert J H Emmons and M J Deily.
Coroner John J. Phelan ruled Redfield L. Forrest without criminal fault in the September 20 accident that killed Charles N. W. Bates. Bates, a Harrison resident, was a passenger in a side car driven by Samuel Coupe when struck by a Cadillac driven by D. Huyler, millionaire candy man of New York, at Round Hill Road and Macken Street.
At Democratic headquarters 1206 Main Street Lawrence T Gallagher chaired a meeting to nominate officers for the Seventh district. Fred Bown was nominated for alderman while Mrs William P Kirk was named chairman of the Ladies Auxiliary and David A Fitzgerald for department registrar. The next Seventh district Democrats meeting is set for September 29 at 5 pm at Main Street HQ.
New England cotton mills may cut all cotton goods by a third following Amoskeag’s move. Woolen goods see a 20 percent cut. Cuban and Porto Rican sugar drops to 15 cents, with other grades at 18 and 17 cents. Canada also trims wholesale sugar prices with Monday effect. Washington notes cheaper vegetables and lower sugar and potatoes, while meat and produce face price cuts at Cleveland eateries under an order from the County Fair Price Commission.
Special to the Times reports a bomb warning in Norwalk causes widespread concern. At R. and G Corset Co 900 workers, only 250 arrived. Cluett Peabody saw low attendance though not named in the warning. City Hall staff reported most on duty. guards patrolled streets and state property. Deputies from several towns remain on duty as investigators deny a planned mobilization while a rumor of dynamite was debunked after a wrecked truck was found loaded with empty boxes.
Hartford Courant editorial notes a shift in public view from calling Mr Brandegee lazy to acknowledging his change over the years. The piece fondly recalls a 15 year-old remark and asserts he is no longer lazy, highlighting evolving perceptions.
Patrolman Corcoran finds Nick Coco badly beaten on North Washington Avenue and robed of $50 and a gold watch by three colored men. Coco, from Waterbury, recalls little and cannot identify suspects. Time of assault near 4 20 AM. Second hold up in week follows Oscar Saffer robbery on George Street for $8. Saffer treated at hospital and discharged. Police investigate both cases.
Gertrude Keast of 51 Courtland Street was pinned between the elevator and floor at the First Bridgeport National Bank building. Her right ankle was fractured and her left possibly contused after the elevator, which had no guards, moved. She was taken to Bridgeport Hospital.
New Haven County Bar Association rejected a proposed minimum fee scale of 25 dollars a day for standard work with higher charges for court appearances. The report outlined retainer and trial fees across Supreme Court of Errors, Superior Court, and Common Pleas Court, plus collection percentages and minimums, but members chose no fixed pricing.
Patrolman John F. Murphy of the Third precinct is suspended by Superintendent Flanagan and charged with neglect of duty. The case, to be heard by the Board of Police Commissioners, concerns his sleep while guarding Dwight C. Wheeler of Acme Shear amid threats from seven men convicted of blackmail and intimidation.
The First District Democratic Club held elections last night at 310 State Street in the human building. Officers elected include Dr. George W. Osborn as president Lionel Levy as vice president James Shane as secretary and J P Murphy as treasurer.

Brigham cited sufficient evidence as Arnold Rothstein and other figures were subpoenaed. Presidents Johnson and Heydler to testify amid investigations into alleged payoffs and game fixing involving White Sox figures and Hal Chase.

Cornelius J Healy and John Wirth reappointed as mechanics to assemble and prepare 32 city machines for the November election. Town Clerk Winton says machines will be set up in school houses for voter practice. Notices go to district chairmen Monday about opening dates next week and assembly start.
