The Connecticut state prison at Wethersfield appoints Henry J. W. Scott as warden to replace Charles C. McClaughey. Scott, about sixty, is superintendent of the Minnesota State Reformatory at St. Cloud and will assume duties in about two weeks. Deputy Warden Parker will oversee the prison during the transition. McClaughey resigns to pursue business in the West. Scott previously served as warden of the New Hampshire state prison at Concord. He is married with children.
Geneva reports preparations for a world wide 24 hour strike on May 1 led by socialists and radicals in Switzerland with foreign agitators active. The movement, backed by Bolshevik Russia's Lenin, tests world proletariat solidarity while Swiss offices prepare for a partial holiday observance.
London April 4 Sir Hamar Greenwood undersecretary for home affairs is appointed chief secretary for Ireland in an official afternoon announcement. He succeeds Jane Macpherson who realigned yesterday.
Reports from Batoum say radical elements are gaining energy after the fall of Novorossiysk. Riza Rey, who looted Batoum in 1918, leads armed bands now supplied with munitions from Odessa. The Georgian government seeks entente authorization to deploy troops to Batoum to restore order amid frontier instability.
Paris reports an expected honor for Chateau Thierry with French and American celebrations awaiting the president’s declaration. The site recalls American Marines repelling German forces in 1813 as Paris plans tribute. The Paine Shoe Company, once with 260 workers, has been closed two months by a strike of the turn shoe operatives.
Major General William Gorgas, former surgeon general, sails to New York and West Africa after accepting a five year Peru sanitation contract. His retaining fee is $15,000 annually. he will return in January with Colonel Wrightson remaining in charge during his absence.
Washington April 2 Attorney General Palmer testified to the House Agricultural Committee that court actions against the big Chicago packers have reached a showdown point. He said the divorce decree provides a clean bill of health or a public judgment against them, and that violations could lead to contempt convictions.
The funeral for Judge Alfred B. Beers was held in Mountain Grove with substantial attendance from citizens, military and social groups. Services at Christ Episcopal Church included a State G A R rites and were led by Rev. John G. Saddler.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert M Campbell United States military attaché in Mexico City his wife and an American woman doctor were attacked by rebels near Tres Marias a station on the line to Cuernavaca. The train was wrecked with dynamite but Campbell and two women escaped hiding in the woods. The fate of other crew and passengers is unknown. Details are being withheld by mail from the embassy in Mexico City.
The police announce a new 24 hour detective system with Lieut James Ramsey moving from the Third Precinct to the Detective Bureau at headquarters. The bureau will stay open all night with two Lieutenants on late duty and three rotating eight hour shifts. Lieut Isaac Williams will replace Ramsey in the Third Precinct.
Patrolman Lyman pursued a fleeing suspect from 326 State Street to State and Lafayette, arresting Joseph Ballick who faced a misdemeanor charge. The burglar broke a window to enter, with a bag containing combs brushes and other items found in the suitcase. Ballick, reportedly known to the force, was arraigned with bonds set at 1000 dollars. Also reported: looming longshoremen strike in New York threatens water traffic and a labor dispute over wages and hours could halt Sound steamers next week.
Robert Bradley of 115 Cross Street Middletown sustained contusions and abrasions to both legs when his truck, en route from New York to Middletown, stalled at Connecticut Avenue and Fifth Street. He attempted to locate the trouble and was struck by an unknown motor. Dr. J A Maxwell of Emergency Hospital treated him.
Thieves forced entry to the Strand restaurant at 1.459 Malin street last night and stole 35 dollars in cash found in a cigar box. The rear door was broken to gain access.
Woonsocket Rhode Island April 2 1200 workers walk out at the Social Mill of the Manville Co prompting the Nourse Mill to close as 500 workers there did not strike. Social Mill seeks 48 hour week at current 54 hour pay. Both mills to reopen next Monday. Pew Paw Michigan April 2 Preliminary hearing in Sarah I Tabor case tied to death of her daughter Maude Tabor Virgo opens today.
The Connecticut Co introduces a one man safety car schedule on State Street at 4 April to ease rush hour traffic. The new cars load quickly and run faster than ordinary cars, moving crowds and aiding thousands of factory workers home each night.

Flori Borden a jitney driver of 301 Osborne was fined $25 and costs after arraignment in city court for operating a public service vehicle without a proper license. The case notes Judas Wilder questioned Bogden's war record and found he had not served in World War I. Hogden was arrested yesterday morning.
