Bassick IUE contract reached after long talks at Barnum
An agreement between Bassick company and Local 229 IUE CIO was reached at 3 45 am after a seven hour session in Rakoczi hall of the Barnum hotel and ratified by a union meeting. About 500 to 600 Bassick workers attended, voting overwhelmingly for the terms. The contract includes wage increases of nine cents for skilled trades, six to 12 cents for apprentices, four cents for non incentive workers, and two cents for incentive workers, plus a 3 cent across the board raise in September 1955. It expands pension benefits for incentive workers, increases hospital benefits, and guarantees job placement on return from leaves. Compulsory retirement at 65 is eliminated. The parties had 11 negotiating sessions.

Father and son hurt as auto overturns near Old Town
