Dr. Walter H. Brown, Bridgeport Health head, urges public caution and cooperation to curb Spanish flu. Inspectors found theatres compliant with ventilation rules and staff eager to help. Fifteen new cases reported, total 77 in record. most are not serious.
Owen Smith of 704 Main Street sustained severe steam burns after being trapped in a pit beside a New York, New Haven and Hartford locomotive at Henry Street. He was pinned beneath a stalled engine as steam escaped, resulting in second degree burns to his leg. Smith, 58, was reported improving at St Vincent's hospital.
Patrolman Frank Calam of the Second precinct was arrested on drunkenness and breach of peace charges. He was taken from 1076 Kossuth Street after midnight, allegedly creating a disturbance at the home of F. Goldman, and brought to police headquarters for arraignment in city court. Calam, a longtime officer, was stripped of his badge pending proceedings.
Up to last night part of the women halved the Minute Women. Sig willing to work full time and part time in city munition factories. The numbers show 3 455 enrolling to help Wallop Wilhelm with 93 59 percent full time. Part time workers total 2 450 and 21.1 percent of the total. Remaining 8 208 are employed for various munition duties. Total women offered up to filing reports at headquarters yesterday was 11 063.
Roumanian peasants gain victories in the counter battles causing alarm among the German and Austro Hungarian military allies. The situation tightens as information filters in from Tome September 6 detailing growing tensions and rumors of uprisings spreading through Roumania.
At a meeting of former striking machinists in Bridgeport factories, 18 delegates were elected to sit at a convention under the Widhts award. The session, held at the High School auditorium, was presided by Alpheus Winter with little opposition. Samuel Lavit was present in the gallery after War Labor Board rulings, though no seat was given to him in the convention. Delegates named include Thevid Clydesdale, Harry Nelson, Edwin OConnell, TH. d. Silver, James Toss, Terlwin Flynn, Timesa Tdgworth, J. M. Cy Jans Quigtoy, WM. Cu Trank, James Jenkins, Arthur Wirfried, Richard Teeknear, Frank Grady, Wil lithon Cahill, Philip Deseletts, Jack Morse, Joseph Wy lands, and others previously elected across shops.
Amsterdam report says Lenin seeks end to Terror as Mir of Moscow notes decree rescinding reign of terror. Centr Committees discuss question and Premier Lenine expresses desire to return to orderly methods of government with majority support.
Fragmentary wartime dispatch describes British bombardment of Frankfort with bombs dropped on airfields and railways. It cites enemy actions and mentions 335 tons delivered, with references to Hussars and cross-communication about Wednesday events.
London dispatch reports Bolshevik plans for a Volga front army of 41 divisions totaling about 500,000 men. The force is continually reinforced and highly influenced by German support. Many Bolshevik soldiers are described as of low value, though some personnel have improved.
A nine year old boy, Jol Sciana, was badly injured in a crash on Beechwood and Stoward avenues while a Bullard car driven by Fred Hanley, a chaffeur from 2200 North avenue, struck another car driven by Mrs John Field of Brookline park. The boy was thrown into the road and suffered severe leg and possible skull injuries. he was near death at St Vincents hospital after an operation. Hanley was arrested for reckless driving.
On Auditor Bernard Keating's recommendation Baidgeport votes to purchase 14 additional shares of Connecticut National Bank stock at par 190. The transfer uses 81 190 from bridge bonds, increasing city holdings to TA shares. The stock remains in the schol fund, under a recent ruling allowing this purchase with no opposition.
Three workmen at Citizen Coal yards on Bostwick avenue escaped serious injury when a coal sifter short circuited. A high tension feed wire broke and the machine charged. They were treated by Dr Coyle of Emergency hospital and sent home. Injured: Mike Sabo, M Helmick, M Adasky.
Philadelphia Sept 26 a police magistrate issued a warrant for the arrest of Mayor Thomas D. Smith on misbehavior and misdemeanor in office based on the affidavit of Otto T Mallery treasurer of the Playgrounds Association who accuses the mayor of wrongful and abusive use of power in appointing an incompetent and unfit recreation supervisor.
Washington reports the American First Army, fighting with the French, advanced on a twenty mile front west of Verdun. They reached an average depth of seven miles and captured twelve towns and over 5,000 prisoners. Pennsylvania, Kansas and Missouri troops stormed Varennes Mont Blainville Vauzuois and Chappy after heavy resistance. Other corps crossed the Forges brook and took Bois de Forges along with Malancourt Bethincourt Montfaucon Cuisy Nantillers Septzarges Danneaux and Gercourt et Drillancourt outlying towns. Prisoners reported exceed five thousand.
American troops attack west of Verdun in cooperation with French forces. German defenses seem to have withdrawn parts of their lines. Unofficial Paris reports say the advance runs five to six miles from the landing point with gains at Gercourt Guisy Montfaucon Cheppy and Varennes northwest of Verdun as General Gouraud reports strong progress occupying the enemy’s first line.
In a terrific storm off Lower California and the northwest coast of Mexico two United States Shipping Board vessels on maiden trips were sunk. A fleet of other craft was battered, La Paz town damaged, and the naval coal depot equipment at Pichinque was damaged. News reached San Diego via a long overdue tug. Several La Paz residents were reported killed. Crews of the sunk ships were rescued by passing steamers after three days adrift.
In Faris and London datelines, Sept. 26, the war office said the Franco American attack along a 40 mile front west of the Argonne is progressing satisfactorily. French troops advanced nearly four miles at some points as German forts were abandoned with little resistance. The joint assault covered the Suippe to Meuse corridor with American units on the right and French on the left, though details continued on page two.
