Escaped Lifer Greenwood Captured After Culvert Hideout
John H. Greenwood, serving a life sentence for murder, was found hiding in a Middletown culvert after escaping from the Wethersfield prison. A rookie state policeman, Walter Stecko, spotted him near a restaurant where Greenwood had entered for coffee and a sandwich using a stolen wallet and funds. He was arrested without resistance and taken to Hartford State Police barracks before transfer to the prison deputy warden. Greenwood’s escape involved stealing a car and keys from the prison canning plant, after which he wandered areas near Middletown and Meriden before the arrest.
