Overell Girl Denies Murder Plot in Calif Trial

In Canta Ana California Heirees Latine Overell testified she did not murder her parents or know who did. Her fiance George Budo Gollum told of events aboard the Mary E cruiser before the explosion. He described gasoline fumes and efforts to air the vessel while police investigated the blast that killed Mr and Mrs Walter E Overell. The court adjourned as Overell cried, with cousin Marjorie Junmquist comforting her amid tense proceedings.

Cobb Breaks World Land Speed Record At 394 MPH

John Cobb of London shattered the world land speed record at 394.196 miles per hour at Bonneville Salt Flats Utah on September 16. He improved his previous marks of 368.9 mph for the mile and 389.7 mph for the kilometer and briefly exceeded 400 mph on land. He started the south run under a light headwind and posted 385.645 mph for the mile and 388.019 mph for the kilometer.

Greenwich Cops Capture Fugitive From Prison Break

DANBURY Sept 16 a 20 year old prisoner who escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution was captured in Greenwich and returned to Danbury with guards. Ranaldo Vincenti of the Bronx had served two months of a six month term for violation of the narcotics act. Greenwich officer Harold Robinson spotted him hitchhiking on the Post road and alerted authorities. Guards retrieved Vincenti about 10 p m after a statewide teletype bulletin described the escape. He had been assigned to a farm work detail outside the prison wall and Warden Shank noted officials believed he fled around two hours before the 4:30 p m discovery. Vincenti was the fourth inmate to escape from the institution.

Services Friday for Stratford Detective Lieut Albright

Detective Lieut Frederick M Albright of the Stratford police died at home after a month long illness at 582 Greenfield Avenue Stratford. He served 24 years and will have services Friday at 8 15 am at the Police funeral home and 9 am at St James church Stratford. He is survived by his wife Sophie Wagner Albright five sons five daughters five sisters and four grandchildren. He held posts from patrolman in 1924 to lieutenant in 1946 and was brother in law of former Police Capt Benjamin Smith.

Norwalk Welfare Board Acts on Charges

Norwalk welfare officials voted to rescind prior actions giving the welfare bureau supervisor full management authority. Miss Dorothea Murray was ordered to submit a written defense by Sept. 25 after an investigating committee’s accusations were outlined. Comptroller Stephen Dokus said the board acted in good faith and would file full recommendations after reviewing the defense and committee report.

Jail Rioter Sentenced 1 3 Years For Forgery

Fairfield county jail inmates rioted at North avenue institution for three weeks. Walter Gattert, 30, of 1082 Central avenue, named as a ringleader, was sentenced to one to three years in state prison on two forgery counts and one count of obtaining money under false pretenses involving $120. He pleaded guilty, claiming mistreatment and demanding truth about a fellow inmate. State's Attorney described him as a jail riot ringleader and warned of limited leniency for those who cannot conform to jail discipline. Public Defender praised the sheriff for handling the outbreak.

Hartford Sept 16 AP Comptroller Fred R Zeller asked the State Personnel board to recreate the position of assistant deputy comptroller and place former State Representative Frank L Barlow in it Barlow resigned from the post at his own suggestion amid criticism of a ten year lease on the Plimpton building Zeller said the state is leasing the building to private parties at higher rates than the lease allowed He accused political opponents of political motive and defended the need to restore Barlow in simple justice

Radio Hams on Alert Across Nation

Radio amateurs from Maine to Florida and nationwide are on alert to handle emergency traffic if the Florida east coast hurricane hammers the mainland. The American Radio Relay League says three major networks are ready and an emergency HQ station is being set up in Washington for the American Red Cross.

Missouri May Alter Course As Hurricane Approaches
