Wilson Club Honors Mrs Lodge Woman of the Year

Mrs John Davis Lodge was named Wilson club Woman of the Year at a reception in the Algonquin club. She announced a Sept 23 tour of Italy France and England for Looks magazine to compare women's occupations in those countries with the United States. Johnson Named to Head G O P State in Fairfield

First Selectman Clifford L. Johnson was nominated by the Fairfield Republican party at a sparsely attended caucus to carry the party banner against John Ferguson, who seeks the Democratic ticket. Johnson seeks a second two year term, with no opposition entered as required. He thanked party members and pledged to push health sanitation and education programs in his reelection campaign.

Alma K Becker Teacher Dies After Long Service

Alma K Becker, longtime English and mathematics teacher at Congress High School since 1933 and Bridgeport school system since 1915, died Monday at 355 Savoy Street. Services arranged by Bishop Funeral Home, 1139 Fairfield Avenue. She had been on leave after a June 1946 fall causing a broken hip. Continued on Page Eight.

80 Ringleaders Arrested in Plot to Kill Benes

Prague authorities announced the thwarting of a terrorist plot to overthrow the government and assassinate President Eduard Benes. Some ringleaders, including former Hlinka members and Vlasov followers, were among those arrested in Slovakia after raids. An attempted bombing targeted Foreign Minister Jan Masaryk, Vice-Premier Peter Zenkl, and Justice Minister Prokop Drtina, with a reward offered for the bomb’s sender.

Nine Die In Crash Of Army B 17 Bomber At Aberdeen

Captain Charles W. Warmack of Paris Tennessee parachuted to safety and became the sole survivor among ten on a B 17 bomber that exploded and sank in Bush River near Aberdeen proving ground. The dead included seven other military personnel. Burdened with official secrecy, next of kin were to be notified.

74 Mile An Hour Wind Storm Strikes Bridgeport Area

A 74 mile per hour gale swept the Bridgeport area injuring one worker on a Stratford roof and causing outages. Roof worker Salvatore Garamella was instantly killed when wind tore a roof away at 266 Surf Avenue Stratford. His brother-in-law Thomas Longo and another man Lonszo were injured. Widespread damage included broken glass, downed poles, and electrical outages across Bridgeport Fairfield Southport and Weston. Police radio transmitters were struck by lightning and switched to emergency units. Temperature fell sharply from 85 to 68 within half an hour as the storm moved through with damaged windows trees and wires reported citywide.
