Yankee Family Finds Hawaii Leaves Deep In Homes
ANN V. MASTERS chronicles the Congers six years in Hawaii and how island life reshaped their Yankee family. Ed Conger, his wife Louise, and children Ruth Carol and a twelve year old strum, dance, and wear island dress, while mission roots in Brookfield connect them to Samuel and Nancy Ruggles. The piece traces Hawaii’s attire from the Mother Hubbard to the modern muu muu and holoku, noting local influence on fashion and culture as the Congers return to Bethel.
