California Beauty Wins Miss America Crown in 1955 Pageant

Lee Ann Meriwether of California won the Miss America title in Atlantic City. The nineteen year old, tall blue eyed contestant from San Francisco was crowned before about fifteen thousand spectators as Evelyn A. Ephrata of Pennsylvania placed the tiara. Meriwether spoke modestly of her hopes for the year ahead.

Maresco Home Robbed Again in Fairfield County

The residence of Anthony Maresco at 650 Fairview Avenue was entered between 8 and 11 30 p m and $600 in cash taken along with several suits shirts three watches and other items. Entry was gained by a rear door that was jimmied open. Maresco is a Fairfield County distributor for Sealtest Milk.

Doctors Operate Inside a Heart in Bridgeport Hospital

Surgeons at Bridgeport hospital performed a delicate two and a half hour operation on Francis Marion Burdge, 35, a General Electric designer and former resident, to open a mitral valve closed by scar tissue from rheumatic fever. The valve opening, normally about one inch and a quarter, had narrowed to a tiny hole, causing blood to back up into the lungs and strain the heart.

Man Falls From Bed In Westport Hospitalized

Westport reports Freemont McElwee 48 of 77 East State Street fell from bed at 7 28 p m and was taken to Norwalk hospital by town ambulance. His condition is listed as good.

Lodge Ribicoff To Open Campaign

Governor Lodge will kick off the GOP drive with a televised campaign telecast on WNHC Thursday from 8 30 to 9 pm. A. A. Ribicoff former congressman will open his campaign telecast on WNHC Monday Sept 20 at 7 30 pm lasting 15 minutes. Ribicoff will then begin a six day intensive campaign in Bridgeport and Fairfield County cities on Oct 17.

City enrollment rises by 379 students in 1954 figures

The Bridgeport school system reports 1954 total enrollment of 21 141 led by elementary grades at 16 505 up 375 from September 1953. High school enrollment stands at 4 636, four more than last year. Gains mainly from Hallen, Walden, Woodrow Wilson, Dunigan, Sheridan and Madison schools.

Edna Hurricane Hits Maine and Canada with Gale Winds

Edna swept across Fairfield county yesterday bringing gale force winds from the sea and heavy rain. Some trees toppled and power lines were downed, but overall damage was slight with 4,000 homes darkened in the Danbury New Milford area.

Hardware stores told to close in Fairfield

Hurricane Florence Develops in the Gulf

The New Orleans weather bureau reports the sixth hurricane of the season forming in the southwest Gulf of Mexico. Florence shows winds up to 75 mph near the center with gales to 100 miles outward and is expected to drift west-northwest at about five mph for the next 12 hours.
