Washington reports President Wilson delivers a Labor Day 1918 message from the White House stressing labor and soldiers unite in the war effort. He calls laborers their champions, cites wartime aims, and frames the day as supremely significant in the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice.
Lenine the Bolshevik premier, shot Friday night in Moscow, reportedly died of wounds. A Petrograd telegraph via Copenhagen and a medical bulletin in Petrograd cited pulse and temperature data. A Pravda telegram from Amsterdam claimed the shooting by a young intellectual girl and arrest followed.
Weather report notes cloudy conditions for New York and cloudy to fair in New England with little temperature change. Forecaster mentions Monday and Tuesday as periods of similar conditions and includes a brief almanac time reference for tides and sunrise.
Americans with British forces in Flanders win Voormezeele marking first combat on Belgian soil. Reports say they also seized strong positions between Voormezeele and Ypres as operations continued in the area.
Seven thousand people heard speakers from the British front at Beardsley Park, denouncing Bridgeport munitions workers who struck. Dr. David Hughes of Wales and Dr. Thomas Travis of Montclair, both veterans and gas victims, urged duty and criticized strikers as risking lives for personal aims.

London reports that in August British forces captured 67,318 German prisoners along with 657 guns, over 5,750 machine guns, and 1,000 trench mortars. In New York John D Rockefeller and his son rode to church behind horses, with Mrs Rockefeller joining.
Rev George M Brown denounces a six day work week as direct aid to the Kaiser in a sermon at the First Methodist Church saying a man must work six days, slothfulness harms the country, and labor demand is at a peak as men and women serve abroad and at home with government attention on the call for manpower in this era of crisis.
Bridgeport streets were almost empty as gas rationing began on Sundays to conserve fuel. City police noted about 400 private cars on the streets while jitneys and business vehicles were scarce. Many owners stayed home or tuned engines for a possible holiday trip. Churches reported lower attendance as parishioners rode less. Garage and service station business fell, doctors made fewer calls, and some residents walked or rode trolleys. The main streets were deserted during morning and late afternoon hours.

Leonard Batitsco and Archie Morrigan, both injured in a Stratford avenue car fire caused by a short circuit in a controller box. Batitsco, 14, suffered severe burns to the legs. STOCKHOLM Sept 1 The Jeryman steamer Annie Stiner arrived in Petrograd on Saturday becoming the first merchant ship flying the German flag to reach Petrograd in four years.
State inspectors report widespread misrepresentation of olive oil and fountain drinks in Bridgeport stores. Investigators found inferior cotton seed oil sold as olive oil and unlabeled products. warrants for criminal arrests sought by Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Theodore Steiber. The probe also addresses theft of mill bottles among dealers and curbs on chemical ingredient practices.
Mrs Curtis Cummings of 40 Goodsell Street attempted to end her life by jumping into Berkshire pond near Berkshire Bridge yesterday morning with her two young children. Two unknown men nearby pulled her from the water, she was revived by Dr Joseph Keegan and taken to Hillside home for observation with her sons aged two and three.
British and French forces advance along a broad front as Peronne is retaken by Haig’s troops. Australian units help seal gains at Leary and Leury, with Bullecourt Morval and areas north of Soissons falling. French report 250 prisoners and a thousand captured in the Soissons sector.
Joseph Turro, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Turro of Stratford, enlisted in the U S army with his brother, has been gassed and is reported among General Pershing's casualties. He served in Company I, 26th Infantry. a brother enlisted at Bridgeport. Haig reports Allied gains at Peronne and surrounding actions as Australian and British forces advance against German positions.
