Washington dispatch reports General Barnett urged Major General Russell to launch a full inquiry after evidence from a court martial showed that natives in Haiti were repeatedly killed by Marines. Barnett called the findings shocking and demanded corrective action and penalties for the guilty.
Augustus Pasquale, a self described kidnapper and killer, will be charged with first degree murder for the death of 18 month old Blakely Coughlin in Norristown. District Attorney Frank A. Renninger said he would seek a murder verdict even if the child's body is not produced, and Pasquale also faces a murder charge in the slaying of Mrs Rose Agherman in Philadelphia, alleged to have occurred about 44 hours before the child was taken from its crib on June 3.
A two and a half year old girl, Katie Hanly, slipped into a main sewer while wandering underground with her brother Isidor. An alert man lowered bystander, then firemen rescued her just before being pulled into a murky current. Crowds above cheered as she emerged unharmed, reuniting with her mother after the perilous plunge.
Mayor Clifford E. Wilson considers designating assembly halls in large city schools as polling places for the November election to meet new 24d ed requirements after women’s enfranchisement. The Telegram reports the mayor’s office has the matter under review and may assign schools such as Lincoln and others as voting HQs where feasible.
In Mays Landing New Jersey on October 18 no indictments were returned against Charley F White and Mrs Earth L Jones of Hammonton regarding the disappearance of Billy Danser. White faced a charge of killing the baby and Jones an accessory charge with bail set at 7500 and 2400 dollars respectively. Prosecutor Gaskill stated the jury found no guilty evidence to hold them. Separately in Philadelphia Clara Edns Dansey sister of Hercules V Dansey said the family believes Billy is dead and the body found in Selssom Swamp is identified as Billy Dansey, calling for authorities to clear up the case.
Athens reports King Alexander’s fever rose from morning until midday peaking at 40.8C (105F) then declined to 38.7C (101.6F) by 7 PM. Pulse stood at 104. The bulletin gave no further detail on the king’s overall condition.
Farmers call for a hearing before the full Federal Reserve Board and its agents at the regular policy conference to discuss agricultural credits before any policy formulation affects them. The move was decided at the agriculture conference in session.
The national coal association predicted no serious soft coal shortage this winter if consumers use care and mines run steadily. Operators report 25 to 30 percent of needed coal cars available and a plan to move 4,000 coal cars daily to the Northwest by December 1 to assure regional supply and ease transportation bottlenecks.
Thomas W. Tennant, president of the Black Rock Association, backs a municipal coal yard to improve coal supply for Bridgeport residents. He cites personal shortages and says a city yard could be run on a business basis. The petition for the yard will be presented to the common council next Monday.
New York January 13 Governor Cox through Senator Pat Harrison urged Senator Harding to a public debate on the League of Nations. Harrison acting for the speakers bureau of the Democratic National Committee offered to cancel Cox engagements to permit a joint discussion with Harding and other Democratic speakers in meetings through Election Day.
A small crowd gathered for the sale of the late Countess Lavinia Magri's belongings in Bridgeport. The auction, held at the home of Barnum appears to have drawn few bidders and netted under $200. A canopy bed and a walnut four poster bed fetched modest sums, as memories of the Countess and her link to Barnum's world were recalled by locals.
BELFAST Oct 18 Sir Hamar Greenwood declared government will press forward with the home rule bill, expand it generously, and tolerate no independent Ireland. He warned that unity of the islands is essential and crime in Ireland will be treated firmly, with no concessions to terrorism despite costs. Page 14.
In Chattanooga on October 18 Senator Harding urged Southern voters to back Republican principles, arguing for nationwide policies to protect American production, including cotton, and criticizing Democratic leadership and the League covenant. He warned against ambiguities in the Constitution that led to the Civil War and stressed unity and equal policy for all sections.
Federal Judge K M Landis to convene a special Grand Jury to probe whiskey transactions involving millions. District Attorney Clyne says evidence links high officials and prominent politicians to the alleged ring. Sadler, a former New York broker, collapsed under threat and was guarded as investigators press the case. A pair tied to the theft of $125 000 worth of whiskey from Louisville to Chicago faces federal court action.
Hartford Oct 13 Gov Balcomproght said he declined to proclaim Sunday Oct 24 as League of Nations Day at the request of the League of Nations Day committee chaired by Harvard president A Lawrences Lowell. He argued the proclamation could be seen as state endorsement and noted the covenant text has been widely circulated for public scrutiny.
Fort Wayne Indiana campaign stop targets Senator Harding and former President Taft. Governor Cox accuses Harding of vacillation on the League of Nations and cites a supposed conspiracy to mislead voters. Cox vows renewed funds and printing to support the covenant stance.
New York reports the death of Mrs Ogden Mills in Paris from heart affliction at 73 Rue de Varennes. Her husband Ogden Mills and son Ogden L Mills were with her. She had arrived in Paris from England with their three children, twin daughters Beatrice and Gladys, and son Ogden L Mills, after visiting her daughter Lady Granard.
Washington October 13 Admiral Benson said the United States and foreign lines will join to reduce freight charges to compete with France which declined to join a joint rates conference. The plan aims to uphold conference rates on the Atlantic while pressuring the French line to cooperate. The action covers United States ports on the East Coast and major European lines, and follows French resistance to the conference.
Senator Capper spoke in Kanaus arguing that an extra ounce of bread in the loaf at the old price reflects a $99.6 million loss caused by Chicago wheat gamblers. He condemned futures gambling as a covert pantheism undermining consumer prices and likened it to Europe’s deadly self-inflicted actions.
