Star Farmer Burd Schantz Built a Northern Farm Empire
Burd Schantz, at 20, named 1954 Star Farmer of America at the Future Farmers of America convention in Kansas City. He grew a 65 acre poultry and dairy operation near Alburtis, Pennsylvania, into a $30,000 enterprise by investing $150 Holstein heifer purchases in 1947, expanding to 42 cows and modern machinery. He plans to reinvest the $1,000 award back into the farm, a habit he credits as his secret to success.
