Jobless rate jumps as women flood labor force

Washington AP reports the September unemployment rate rose to 4.1 percent the largest monthly rise in five years. Labor officials cite a surge of women entering the job market while total civilian employment fell about 100 000 due to strikes in Detroit and New York. The Negro unemployment rate dropped to 3.5 percent with whites and Negroes now tracked separately since 1954.
