Balloons released near Tracy California rise to 38,000 feet with winds pushing them eastward. Timing devices explode the bags after two to three days, with 300 pounds of experimental equipment parachuting to ground and handed to nearest air base. Rainfall Offers Brief Hope in Western Drought
Torrents across the Great Plains brought relief to dryland farmers and ranchers with revived pastures and usable ground for planting. Experts caution that one good shower cannot end a multi year drought and that two abnormal years of rain are needed to replenish subsoil moisture. The system drenched New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, and parts of Kansas and Missouri, causing both gains and flooding in Roswell and Monahans.
