Municipal officials from Newtown Monroe Trumbull and Bridgeport met in Trumbull to discuss proposed routes for the state relocation of Route 25. Bridgeport planners urged early state input and local officials expect a preferred route by March.

He landed in Charlottetown after four hours behind schedule with deteriorating Atlantic weather preventing a record.
An explosion demolished a 1 1 2 story brick building in downtown Kansas City injuring no one. The Sam Flack s Office Supplies at 1315 Walnut reported loss around 80 000. Gas cause speculated by officials who declined comment. Rubble damaged cars and windows across a two block area.
Carl Frederick Dietz 77 former president of Bridgeport Brass 1921 to 1928 died of a heart attack at his home near Clearwater Florida He was a noted engineer and civic leader in Bridgeport and Syracuse holding multiple executive roles and chairmanships in Lamson and Norton He moved to Greenwich in 1951 and had resided in Clearwater the past year while keeping Lamson board duties and leadership roles.
A 67 year old Bethel woman was killed and a 77 year old woman suffered fractures of both legs and an arm when a parked car they sat in rolled downhill and struck a tree on Rob inson avenue shortly before 5 pm today.
RCA reported it picked up a signal matching the one Russia said a satellite transmitted. A recorded 10 second beep, heard from three directions at 8:07, 8:15 and 8:22 p.m., was broadcast nationwide by NBC and CBS. RCA will continue listening and recording with machinery set up after Moscow announced the launch.
In Washington an AFL CIO spokesman and President George Meany said no comment on Hoffa’s election. A rugged battle shapes up over whether the Teamsters stay in AFL-CIO with three weeks until the Executive Council meets to decide if the union remains within the federation. Hoffa told delegates the Teamsters want to stay in the AFL CIO and urged rescinding corruption findings. He noted unions such as Mineworkers Machinists and Carpenters have left the federation at times.
State health officials warned a widespread Asian flu outbreak is likely as 5,000 to 7,000 cases emerge statewide amid delays in vaccination. Norwich and New Haven schools report high absenteeism, with Wilbur Cross and Hillhouse among hard hit. 40,000 residents urged to vaccinate. Bridgeport reports one confirmed case as vaccines roll out.
A City hall session of selectmen and the town clerk swore in 347 new voters yesterday, the largest one day total since sessions began. Through the year 1,666 new voters have been registered. The Oct 12 general registration period runs 9 am to 8 pm with a special Nov 4 session for those whose qualifications mature between Oct 12 and the election. Preliminary voting lists will be posted today, subject to revision. Registrars’ office at 176 State Street open 9 am to 5 pm weekdays through Oct 29 for corrections. restoring former voters by Oct 12. Final list expected to shrink from last year’s 78,423 eligible voters.

The Soviet Union announced the first man made satellite is now circling Earth at 560 miles altitude. The globe sized 23 inches and weighing 185 pounds was launched by a multi stage rocket and can be tracked by radio signals and glasses. Observers in New York and London heard the signals as engineers recorded beeps.
The Defense Department reported that the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington recorded three passes of the Russian satellite over the United States. One pass appeared near Washington while two were farther west, as the lab continues tracking to obtain signals for scientific data.
