Lew Burdette outpitched his former team, holding the Yankees to seven hits as the Braves won 4-2. Wes Covington delivered the game winning single in the fourth after Joe Adcock and Andy Pafko singled. Hank Bauer homered for the Yankees and Johnny Logan added a fourth inning drive as both sides traded runs early.

Artie Auerback TV radio actor dies at 54

Artie Auerback, known as Mr. Kitzel on Jack Benny shows, died of a heart condition in West Valley Community Hospital Van Nuys California. A native of New York City, he was a former Daily News reporter and photographer and appeared in radio and stage roles before joining Benny’s program about 12 years ago.

Fairfield Visitor Killed by Truck

A 66-year-old dentist, Dr. Alvin M. Mauer of Le Mars Iowa, was killed last night crossing Post road near Kings Highway Fairfield. His wife Bertha narrowly escaped injury as Alfred Johnson 28 of Brooklyn NY swerved to avoid them. Mauer died later at St. Vincent's Hospital of head and abdominal injuries. Johnson held on $2,000 bond on a charge of driving so as to cause loss of life. court date set for Oct 28. Detective and patrol investigated. Fairfield's first road fatality this year.

Farmers Called In Girard Trial

Maebashi Japan Oct 4 AP prosecutors began calling Japanese farmers and shell pickers to testify against US Army Sgt J G I William Girard. The witnesses were on the firing range Jan 30 when Mrs Naka Sakai was killed by a shell fired with a grenade launcher. Tests at the scene Feb 11 checked shell case trajectories to verify shots were fired toward the victim.

Plane missing on Vermont hop

New York Oct reports a light plane with three officers and a pilot vanished during a flight from Governors Island to Burlington Vermont. The L-20 Beaver carried six passengers and search efforts began along the New York Burlington route with Air Force and Civil Air Patrol involvement.

In Mount Vernon New York two teens prank a third by stealing his schoolbooks at Fordham Preparatory and fleeing onto the tracks. John Daly Graham 14 of Scarsdale was struck and killed by the 4 02 White Plains express while retrieving the books. The incident drew about 200 spectators as Graham attempted to reclaim his possessions. The two youths were hospitalized in shock and their names were not released.

Alier Aims for 5500 Mile Rome Nonstop Flight

In Galveston Texas on October 3 AP reports pilot William Wyatt off, a 25 year old former Marine fighter, attempts a non stop 5500 mile flight from Galveston to Rome in a single engine monoplane widened with 260 gallons of gasoline. He hopes to complete the hop in 36 to 40 hours to beat William Odom's 1949 Honolulu to Teterboro record of 4957 miles. Wyatt left Galveston at 12 57 p m after delays to install extra instruments. Three seats were removed to fit the extra fuel tanks.

Lycoming to lay off over 900 workers in phases

Lycoming division of Aveo manufacturing will cut more than 900 jobs over three months as piston engine contracts end and retooling for gas turbine engines continues. About 60 laid off already, with 300 this month, nearly 400 in November and about 200 in December. The firm offers job placement help and maintains contact with employment services and nearby aircraft firms.

Burglary Hits Home of Frank D. Civitella

Police report a burglary at 69 Goldenrod Avenue where more than $1,800 in cash was taken from hidden places after a glass panel was broken to gain entry. Frank D. Civitella, an employee of Casco Products, returned home around 4 45 p.m. and reported the break. Members of the family had left earlier in the day.
