Youths are arrested in Stratford and Milford after a football rally ends in a riot. The Supreme Court has not resolved the judgeship snarl, delaying recognition of interim judges on a de facto basis.
State Supreme Court ruled six interim appointees lack lawful title to judgeships in Hartford and Meriden, creating de facto status for three latest appointees. Chief Justice Wynne says he will recognize the Hartford and Meriden judges as de facto officials while a separate Manchester ruling preserves Gryk’s post. Boce Barlow, William A. Jacobs, and Francis J. O’Brien named as interim appointees this year. Barlow, a 42 year old lawyer and former prosecutor, vows to take his seat Monday becoming the state’s first Negro judge.
Deputy Defense Secretary Donald Quarles told the Senate preparedness subcommittee that the United States and Russia are neck and neck in developing intercontinental ballistic missiles. He noted factors beyond rocket testing and both Thor and Jupiter have moved to production.

Riots erupt in Milford Stratford and Fairfield as rival high school students clash with police cars damaged and dozens arrested. In Milford the football rally turned riot with cars harassed and a girl knocked down. In Stratford and Milford teenagers roved streets while Fairfield saw a small arson on a bridge near Unquowa Road. Police detained about 150 Milford youths across towns. several were sent home with parents.
Dr John T Fleming 51 of 1967 Himm ington turnpike Nichols died tonight at his home after a brain operation in July at Neurological hospital New York City. He served as orthodontist at 955 Main Street Bridgeport and was secretary of the Trumbull Zoning Board and a Democratic Town committee member. He was born in New Haven and attended Hillhouse High School. A Lehigh University Tufts Dental School and Dewey School of Orthodontists graduate, he did graduate work at Columbia. He was orthodontic consultant on St Vincent’s staff and held leadership roles in Bridgeport Dental Association Connecticut State Dental Society Northeastern Society of Orthodontists and American Society of Orthodontists. He belonged to Warren Harding high school Fathers club Stratford Lions Algonquin and University clubs of Boston. Survived by wife Hilda M Fleming and three sons Daniel, Peter and John.
New York AP reports Vincent J. Squillante, a garbage industry figure, was sentenced to a year in prison for violating probation in an income tax case amid Senate probes and metro official scrutiny.
Six pilots in Voodoo jets launched from Ontario International airport at dawn, completing a round trip with one pair returning early. Captain Sweet posted a 6 hours 42 minutes flight time, while First Lt Klatt set a 3 hours 5 minutes East West record. Sweet earned a DFC and Schrecengost an Air Medal as Gen Mack praised the mission's deterrence value.
In November 1957 downtown stores remain closed to shoppers today and plan reopening Friday until 9 p.m. Retail outlets will close at 5 30 p m as regular hours resume event lighting will be turned on Friday evening to mark the Christmas display debut.

The league favors an appeals board to review inspector orders on building modifications.
Connecticut Turnpike toll authorities announce commuter tickets to benefit state users and boost revenue. Commutation books valid for 42 trips through a toll station, one month, priced at 3.50 plus 8 1 3 cents per ticket. general toll is 25 cents for passenger cars. Commissioner Argraves says commuter rate desirable for Connecticut users.
President Eisenhower will host Thanksgiving at the White House with his wife and four grandchildren visiting from nearby Alexandria. The White House says a traditional turkey is on the menu. Ailing Ike will observe the holiday as Rev. Edward Elson urged national prayers for the President’s speedy recovery.
