17-Year-Old Fairfield Prep Student Wins Jaycee Essay Contest
Philip J Guerin Jr a 17 year old Fairfield Prep senior won first prize in the Bridgeport Junior Chamber of Commerce Voice of America contest for area high school students on the theme I Speak for Democracy His essay praised democracy its freedoms and heritage and argued that even a seventeen year old can defend the government by voting and speaking freely His tape will be sent to Hartford to enter the statewide contest with finals in Washington DC and he plans to attend Fairfield University or Holy Cross after graduation He is active in Debating society The Bellarmine Quarterly Athletic Association Radio Play Shop Sodality The Hearthstone yearbook and broadcasts Fairfield Prep football games He is the son of Mr and Mrs Philip J Guerin Sr of 228 Melville Drive Fairfield He has a sister Eileen Guerin a senior at New Haven Teachers College.
