Mistrial Declared in Two Insurance Suits Over Lake Candlewood Fire
A Danbury man, Melvin Farmer, faces two insurance suits seeking 7500 in damages after a fire destroyed a summer cottage in the Lake Candlewood area two years ago. Judge Otto H. LaMacchia declared a mistrial due to belated pleadings after trial began. The General Insurance Company of America and London and Scottish Assurance claim Farmer mishandled benzoline and white gasoline and misused a blowtorch during painting of his father in law Mose Michaels's cottage on June 12, 1952, causing the blaze. The insurers say they paid 4100 and 1800 respectively on policies. Edgar W. Krentzman represents the insurers. Joseph G. Shapiro represents Farmer.
