Fairfield widow Mrs Charles Van Gunten cracked the Sunday Post puzzle after 44 weeks winning 1100 dollars. At her home 17 Quincy Street she said she did it for fun and recalled entering three times with single solutions. Her dog Woody joined the celebration as she celebrated the big news.

Hartford November 14 AP The Connecticut State Highway Department reports August observations at 13 points show an average vehicle speed of 43.8 mph, the lowest since 1948. Out-of-state drivers averaged 46.7 mph, Connecticut drivers 43.6 mph, and parkways 52 mph with a recent uptick. Rezoning for speed limits reduced overages since 1956.

TAR CRASH KILLS PARKWAY DRIVER
Norwalk, Nov 14 David J Randall 55 of Cranbury road was killed when his car struck a tree on the Merritt parkway esplanade near Route 7. The vehicle then rolled into the westbound lanes where a second car ran over him. He rode alone. Randall was a space buyer for Sawyer Ferguson and Walker and member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists. He is survived by his wife a son and a daughter.
