Economic Decline in German Mark Pressed by Imports and Speculation
Harvard Economic Service notes Germany’s mark decline driven by heavy foodstuffs and raw materials imports and reparations currency purchases. German investors buy foreign exchange while exports are held, and land sales to foreign speculators drain mark holdings. Labor shortages deepen as immigration limits bite, with moulders in high demand. American goods rise in Britain and colonies, exports to US allies rise from 15 to 45 percent over years. Local real estate projects falter as financing gaps and high land costs hinder new builds and hotels or theatres. some sites sit idle awaiting capital.
