Once Noted Swindler Now in an Almshouse
Danville Illinois notes the 58 year old Alonzo J. Whiteman once a Minnesota state senator and Duluth mayor. After college and law training he rose in banking and lumber interests, backed Grover Cleveland in 1888, ran for Congress and failed, then moved to Chicago and to the board of trade. Speculation in wheat and lumber led to misfortune, followed by forged checks and counterfeit pool tickets. He spent two prison terms totaling five years and now lives in the county almshouse.
