Once Noted Swindler Ends in Danville Almshouse

Alonzo J. Whiteman once a Minnesota state senator and Duluth mayor, famed for his wealth and political influence, returned to Danville at 58 to live in the county alms house. Once a college and law school graduate, he rose in banking and lumber before backing a Cleveland campaign speech, later losing fortune through wheat and lumber speculation, a bookmaking check forgery, and counterfeit pool tickets. He served two prison terms totaling about seven years after a long crime career.

Injunction Fails to Open Providence Saloons

Providence police and officials insist their closure powers remain. Walter A. Presley, chair of the police commissioners, says federal injunction against wartime prohibition does not affect local enforcement as of October 28. Saloons in Providence will not reopen for beer sales despite the prior ruling.

Polar Land crew believed dead after sinking off Cape Breton

Captain Venning of the British steamer Ernemore said the Polar Land sent distress calls last Sunday and was found abandoned with no trace of the ship or crew after a 400 mile search. High seas led him to doubt any lifeboats survived the storm.
