Washington November 13 President Wilson gave no indication of how he views the European suggestion for him to attend the great conference to reestablish peace in a war torn world. Most advisers believe his acceptance would risk little and add nothing beyond the work of the American delegation to be appointed.
Mrs. Nathaniel Worthen, chair of the Red Cross military relief chapter, says workers will continue with refugee garments knitting and finishing existing allotments. Headquarters orders emphasize sustaining efforts and dressings stock, with auxiliaries meeting as usual while awaiting further instructions.
Weather report from Ashington on November 13 notes fair conditions in the east and south New England, with rain along the southeast coast. Friday expected partly cloudy. Almanac details include sunrise at 6 29 a m and sunset at 4 55 p m with high and low tides and moonset times.
Washington officials announced flour purchases may be limited to those already bought, with grain corporation handling unsold wheat flour. Bread may appear on tables without restriction, but conservation remains urged. Sugar allotments rise to four pounds monthly per capita in beet and Louisiana cane regions, with higher allowances during meals and a general three pounds per month nationwide for households and three per 90 meals for public dining. Increased household sugar quotas due to cargo and storage shortages.
German forces move slowly along the front toward the rear as American armies near the Meuse and Moselle. Armistice provisions for German withdrawal show no blockers yet. Front lines appear a fringe of soldiers with shifting positions and behind lines supply trains and routine duties continue while rear towns grow livelier.
Orders from the Provost Marshal General Crowder to draft boards state all general and voluntary special army calls are cancelled. The note adds that nothing should be construed as final, with further details continued on page two.
New York, Nov. 13 news that every American soldier and sailor will find his old job awaiting him after discharge, per Stephen Mason president of the National Association of Manufacturers. The statement calls the obligation to be ready to rehire those who left to serve and open doors to opportunity and prosperity. Messages of congratulations to British and Canadian manufacturers accompany the note. Jas, Horan & Son move to a new lower shop at Main and Bank Streets, Ady.
Plans for reorganizing the war department and the army are being formulated by the general staff and will soon go to Secretary Baker. Demobilization hinges on the new policy, with legislation likely to be required. Officials expect a legislative fight over universal military training and policy. The regular army is authorized at about 375,000, but total armed strength in Europe and at home may require more. Only about 100,000 of the 3,700,600 under arms may stay beyond peace. War-time enlistments were for the war period only. Continued on page two.
Washington November 18. Student officers in training at army central training camps may be allowed to return to civil life immediately if they desire. Secretary Baker indicated today. The corps themselves probably will be continued until the present classes have been graduated. At expiration of that period those who complete a tia course will be tendered commissions in the officers reserve corps.
London Nov 13 The allied fleet arrived off Constantinople today after moving through the Dardanelles on Tuesday. British and Indian troops occupying the forts paraded as the ships passed, marking a show of force in the region near the Meuse and Stenae area.
London reports British Foreign Office confirmation of the crown prince rumor and Berlin dispatches claim the German crown prince is at the front. Bridgeport Battery C of the 56th Artillery fired the last American shot near Stenay before the armistice, with Lieutenant Harry Carpenter taking the lanyard at 10:55. The unit, composed of Bridgeport and Connecticut men, endured a night of shelling as dawn broke over the front.
General Pershing presented the Distinguished Service Medal to Marshal Joffre at the military academy in Paris on November 13 in the name of President Wilson. Pershing praised Joffre’s noble character and great task, while Joffre said the honor drew him closer to the American army and people and expressed pride in being the godfather of the American army.
A marauder opened fire in Rawley’s saloon on Washington Avenue and Main Street as the keeper counted daily proceeds. The shot narrowly missed proprietor Rawley, who described the assailant to authorities. the suspect fled before closing time.
Secretary Daniels announced that all warships under construction or contracted will be completed. Navy yards Mare Island Philadelphia Norfolk and New York will be enlarged to handle two years of work. Congress in 1926 halted work for urgent wartime craft, while outstanding ship contracts include many destroyers and ships from the three year program.
A Central News dispatch from Amsterdam reports former German emperor William Hohenzollern left his residence this morning with officers, then traveled by motor car with Dutch officials. The ex ruler appears resigned to life in exile as large transports and trunks accompany him through the city in what seems a settled departure from Germany.
Berlin dispatch reports that democrats in the Tay DePA SOVernie Tinneade arrested Admiral Von Tripitz and other leaders linked to prolonging the war. The telegram notes the removal of high officials including Wolfgang Kapp and Mollzendorff and references a tribunal and peace-hindering actions.
STOCKHOLM reports Bolshevik forces marching on Finland and threatening the Finnish seaport of Vibors, northwest of Petrograd, as Soviet troops push toward coastal targets. Roosevelt, hospitalized with sciatica and rheumatism, notes a rough day and slow progress toward recovery.
Bridgeport’s United War Work campaign jumped from 62 050 to 113 622 at a noonday luncheon as teams push toward the crossbar goal. An earlier 24 hour gain of 40 009 spurred added effort and officials expect the total to near 140 000. executives plan an additional 2 906 to the top team’s subscriptions as the industrial division leads the drive.
