Chester W. Chapin Dies Railway And Steamship Pioneer

Chester W. Chapin, noted railway and steamship figure, died after months of illness in his late life. He led New York and New Haven Steamship Co affairs and oversaw family estate administration. Chapin helped organize industrial coalitions, backed river, harbor, and water properties, and supported the Daniey Workship and Washington projects. He was a yachtsman and navigator with a license, once commanded a private fleet between New York and Cadiz, Spain, and belonged to civic groups. Four Men Die in Locomotive Explosion at Moreland

At 11 last night four men were killed and three injured when a locomotive motor exploded near Moreland, 14 miles from Corning. The regular engine of a southbound New York Central freight train, aided by a second locomotive, caused debris to scatter 400 feet ahead. the crown sheet gave way, and the wrecked locomotive bounded and slid along the rails. Superintendent McCormack could only say the crown of the locomotive dropped.

New Brunswick Nov 1 Associated Press reports Mrs Jane Gibson, a farmer, refutes a neighbor’s affidavit used by authorities in the Hall murder case. The document, signed by Nellie Russell, claims Gibson was not near the scene on Sept 14. Russell places Gibson with her at the Russell home that night.

Woman Dies From Accident Injuries in Willimantic

Mrs Mathilda Wolleen aged 59 of Stuvent Springs died here after an automobile wreck on a North Windham road. Her neck was broken when the car skidded into a ditch and overturned then caught fire. Her husband and several friends were with her. others were not injured.

Airman Killed in Hartford Aviation Meet Relay Crash

Lieutenant John Blaney of Mitchel Field died at Brainerd Municipal field during an aviation meet relay race. His aircraft miscalculated distance near the finish, striking a tree and bursting into flames at about 40 miles per hour. The army investigation found no fault with the plane or conditions, attributing the tragedy to pilot miscalculation. Blaney had served in Germany and the Philippines and leaves a family in Long Beach.

Old Navy Flier Involved In Norfolk Plane Crash

Nov 12 Commander Godfrey Chevalier, one of the Navy’s most experienced pilots, was seriously injured when his Langley Field aircraft crashed near Norfolk. Chevalier had previously flown a plane from the Langley aircraft carrier and made a safe return landing. His wife, Mrs Chevalier, rushed to Norfolk after learning of the accident.

Parish Mother's Death as Son Conducts Mass

Mrs. Michael Crenitzky, 73, mother of Father Stephen Csernitzky, pastor of St Stephen's Hungarian Catholic Church, died in the parish house at 330 Spruce Street during a mass. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 8:30 from the late residence and from St Stephen's church with High Mass. The funeral home is John Leake & Sons, 326 Mankock Avenue.
