New York May 27 Judge Gary urged production must rise to meet postwar needs. He warned that world recovery is hampered by war damage and demoralization. He cited current output well below consumption needs and urged retooling and policy readjustment for stabilization and revival.
May 11 Washington The Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association and Chairman Benson of the Shipping Board reached an agreement on working conditions and wages after meetings with Secretary Davis and President Harding. If ratified locally, the terms would remain in effect for one year.
President Harding, a noted golf fan, grapples with the defeat of America’s top amateurs in the English tournament. He questions why Chick Ergang and others in the group beat him, then jokes about England’s prohibition.
At a board meeting held Friday at the Streetfield hotel Seymour Lacy resigns as general secretary of the Young Men's Christian Association. William S. Spencer states the board urged reconsideration but accepts the resignation after sixteen years of service. Lacy plans rest and study after July 1, with future plans not yet settled.
An estimate of the atmosphere during six months of Congress shows hesitation and lack of confidence. Both parties feel indecision as leaders and rank and file face broken promises. W J Hunter of Walmer and Kingsdown Golf Club won the British Amateur Championship at Hoylake defeating Allan Graham of Royal Liverpool 12 up with a 3 hole play. The final faced personal tragedy for Graham whose father lay critically ill. A British amateur team may visit the United States next year for a return match as prizes were presented to a crowd of several thousand.
NEW GLAVIN Conn May 2 Chester Baler 18 of Spriis Meld Sr was sentenced to the Conn soln l Reformatory today by Judge Thomas in United States District court. The youth recently was sentenced to the Atlanta Penitentiary for four years for violation of the Dyer Anti lo Die net. But the court receded hea wage today and altered the sentence.
Former Bridgeport mayor Henry Lee will lead The American Transit as president. The company plans a jitney system for Bridgeport and nearby areas, modeled after London and New York City, with Hubbard and Hall drafting the articles of incorporation for the venture seeking to organize local operators.
Washington May 27 A naval base project on the Pacific coast faces repeated rejection as debate over disarmament and league participation intensifies. Key amendments seeking suspension of construction and U S participation with the League of Nations were defeated, while party lines largely split on the issue.
In Philadelphia on May 27, Col Thomas W Miller alien property custodian seized all Grover Cleveland Bergdolls property in the United States and the Bergdoll family assets by order of President Harding. The move targets Grover Bergdoll who fled to Germany as a draft evader. Mrs Emma Bergdoll and Erwin Bergdoll also lose their holdings as the government takes control if the family does not promptly turnover all state and personal property.
A seven year old Groton boy, Gilbert D. Smith, was killed when struck by an automobile driven by S. J. Webb of Hartford and Noank near the Pequonock river bridge as he and two sisters were returning from school. The two sisters were uninjured and Webb was shot. The boy’s sister died previously in a trolley car accident.
Senate committee favored the Johnson resolution for a U S Senate investigation into the West Virginia Kentucky mining disorders. Action was scheduled for next week. Memorial Day holiday alters post office hours with limited delivery and altered window closures.
Five year old Dorothy Kearndy was hit yesterday afternoon at 83 Lincoln Avenue and taken to St Vincent's hospital with two broken legs and a fractured arm. Police say Walter J. Maton, 31, of 66 Wilmat Avenue, drove the car and was charged with careless driving.
London May cabinet to send large reinforcements to Ireland and adopt new measures against Republican forces in the south and west. The Times reports a planned systematic roundup of rebels with mobile troops, though details remain unsettled amid ongoing emergencies and industrial strife.
Mrs Nott’s signed police statement recounts the events of August 29 3920 at her home in Judson Ave detailing a confrontation where George Nott was harmed and several suspects discussed taking possessions.
