Hartford May 28 after a long debate the house passed the strike and lockout bill 136 to 84. If approved by the senate and signed by Governor Lake it would curb unwarranted industrial warfare in the state. It imposes penalties on both sides for strikes or lockouts in breach of contracts and bans closed shop and open shop tactics.
Washington May 24 Exclusion from the Congressional Record was demanded for a speech by Representative Michaelson Republican Impis accusing British propaganda and financial interests of pushing the United States into war President Wilson seeking neutrality. Representative Connally challenged the publication as by one unworthy to sit in Congress the House adjourned after parliamentary wrangles over exclusion and quotes of former Texas representative Callaway about newspaper propaganda.
Four Marine Corps Martin bombers will test land plane bombing of a radio controlled battleship Iowa off Virginia Capes on June 28. Army planes are withheld, using ten seaplanes and four airships instead. Navy and Army-Navy committee members dispute distance from shore for meaningful tests.
Obadiah M. Knapp of Wallingford dies today in a Hartford hospital after an operation. Born in Greenwich 80 years ago, he left Yale to enlist in Company I, 4th Connecticut Volunteers, serving in the Civil War and mustered out in 1887. He was a member of Lombard Post G. A. R. Greenwich and the Loyal Legion New York Commandery.
Nathan Swedler a 15 year old at 473 Grand Street suffered a broken left arm after attempting to skate with one skate and fell on the sidewalk. He was taken to St Vincent's Hospital. The report notes hospital authorities and contains a quotation urging Congress to order a sweeping investigation.
Washington March 26 No body can follow events in Washington without noting that foreign relations seem to push aside other matters. The big item is the new Tax Bill, with Senate Finance Committee hearings daily as lawyers from insurers and other interests push their cases. New York testimony before a legislative committee alleges the New York fire insurance exchange controls the market with a virtual monopoly. Ten leading companies reportedly set aside about 197.6 million dollars in reserves in 1920 and earned large profits. experts say these profits could reduce premiums. Brokers pledged to limit commissions and deny access to outsiders, a practice Untermyer calls reprehensible and aimed at preserving monopoly.
Legislature likely to authorize raising sewer bond interest from five to six percent in 1917. City sought extra one percent after bond market difficulties delayed sales, with officials aiming to fund over $500,000 in bonds.

The nomination of David H Plair of Winston-Salem NC to internal revenue commissioner was confirmed 69 to 74 amid opposition from Senator Johnson and others. Blair’s approval fills the office for a fortnight, with Mellon in interim. Johnson charged Blair with violating the North Carolina primary law at the Chicago convention.
President Dawe and the fire commissioners praised May for skillful driving that prevented loss of life after the chemical truck collided with a jitney on Washington Avenue near Kossuth Street. The meeting also discussed recalling retired firefighters to Pleasure Beach this summer and approved six hydrants with Crane valve gear.
