Two Bridgeport inmates Robert Mandel and Joseph Rose escaped Wethersfield State Prison Tuesday night and were recaptured about 13 hours later in a Hartford cellar. They are in solitary confinement awaiting arraignment on escape charges with up to ten more years added. Authorities investigate civilian clothes, supplies, and how the escape occurred. The men, previously jailed for robbery with violence, escaped through a ventilator port using ball diamond spikes.

Senate approves largest postal rate increase bill

Westport officials cut the 37 mill levy to 31 mills for the 1938 39 fiscal year starting July 1 in an executive session at Staples High School. Fire Burns Ten Acres at Milford Meadows
Fire scorched a ten acre area at Milford Town Meadows on May 21 at 5 pm. Ten feet high reeds and underbrush burned with flames reaching 20 to 30 feet. Over 30 firemen and volunteers fought the blaze for about 30 minutes and remained on site to dampen the scorched area. Black smoke drifted as far as West Haven.

Fairfield residents backed teachers pay in a referendum defeating a 99 600 dollar cut to the Board of Education budget.
