A Coast Guard Patrol boat 2337 detonated its after-gasoline tank near Governor's Island and Katie Island, drowning seaman Joseph H. McGrean. W. E. Mills was badly burned, others escaped by leaping into the water as flames spread. Mills was treated ashore, and rescue efforts for McGrean continued.
