BHA Seeks Rent Cut as Jobless Tenants Face Higher Pressures

Bridgeport Housing Authority votes to seek federal permission to cut rents for tenants who lost jobs. Proposal would base rents on current presence rather than past income, potentially charging as low as 17 dollars monthly for some. Also plans to solicit land near Hillside Home for a 50 unit elderly housing project and review tenant incomes every three months.

Fairfield County jail expansion on North Avenue may shrink from 120 to 100 cells to fit the $650000 bond funds. The building commission postponed contract awards to Wednesday to review savings, as architect John W. Handy warned costs could rise to about $685010 with contingencies added to bids of $609950.

Bridgeport student crowned Wistaria Queen at University ball

Mary Catherine McGrath, 19, a dental hygiene sophomore at University of Bridgeport, was named Wistaria Queen during the Ritz ballroom gala opening Wistaria Weekend. Lottie Harner and four court members from New York and Connecticut joined in the event attended by about 1,200 people with Freddy Martin and his orchestra.
