More than 500 inmates rioted for five hours at Bordeaux Prison Montreal demanding a new governor and better food. Two prisoners and a guard were injured. Fire destroyed the chapel and two cell blocks as police and firefighters intervened. riot subsided with no hostages reported.
In Panmunjom the fifth plenary session ran 11 minutes with most talk by North Korea’s Gen Nam Il. Allies and Reds plan to reconvene tomorrow amid fading hope of resolving prisoner repatriation. Only about 70 000 of 170 000 prisoners favor return to Reds.
Official Weather Bureau data show Bridgeport and vicinity mostly fair with night cool and 45 degrees, tomorrow partly cloudy and around 75. Winds will be north today shifting to southwest tomorrow. Denver May 4 AP Effects of a nationwide oil workers strike mounted as aviation suffered the hardest hit. About 90 000 oil workers on a sixth day. Major refineries including Standard Oil Indiana at Whiting Ind shut down. Secretary of Interior Oscar Chapman ordered gasoline use limited for airlines and private flyers starting next Tuesday. Air Force had already curtailed training flights to save fuel. Government order cuts aviation gasoline output by about 35 percent and overall fuel for U S and foreign airlines by 30 percent. Private fliers barred from pleasure flights. Carrier and non carrier aircraft barred from taking delivery of more than 65 percent of March usage for 28 days beginning May 6.
Bridgeport gasoline and fuel oil distributors report ample supplies for weeks with no panic buying expected. Eastern seaboard fares better than inland areas, Bridgeport’s large storage blamed for carry. Officials say rationing would stem from state or national directives, not individual firms.
Seoul reports Sunday near dusk over Mig Alley as thirty American Sabre jets held numerical advantage and shot down four MIG-15s while forcing seven others to retreat into Manchuria. Sabre pilots covered rail-cutting F-80s. within nine minutes four MIGs fell and two more were smoking and damaged.
L Richard Belden campaign manager for William A. Purtell says a bandwagon swing has started toward the Republican nomination for U S Senator. He cites weekend senatorial district conventions in Connecticut delivering Hartford and Tolland counties with 160 delegates and predicts Middlesex Litchfield Fairfield and Eastern Connecticut will back Purtell. He asserts Purtell is assured of strong support and will be nominated as the race tightens ahead of the May 27 convention.
An eight member GOP study group chaired by Rep Sadlak expands charges that the International Materials Conference quota system short-changes the United States. They claim the IMC allocation of copper gives the U S only 49.1 percent of world supply, causing a 214000 ton shortfall and rising unemployment in copper using industries. In Pittsburgh May 4 AP reports CIO United Steel Workers suffer resentment as talks collapse. Production continues to rise with more workers joining mills. Pete Drazovich laments a merry go round while John Groza warns a strike may follow. Murray defends USW stance as tension grows.
The Associated Press reports Democrats will name 180 delegates and Republicans 78 in a busy week, with Florida's presidential preference primary tomorrow. Russell of Georgia leads sentiment in the Democratic race, while Taft regains momentum for the GOP, as Ohio voters will pick 56 Republican and 54 Democratic delegates.
Ansonia police report a midnight burglary in a third floor apartment where a sneak thief stole 538,000 in cash. The money included $23,000 from the Kosars savings and $10,000 held as estate administrator. The thief entered via a jimmied window and took cash kept in cedar chests without disturbing other valuables. Detective Sgt. Fred Shortell said the thief knew of the hidden stash and likely watched the couple. The Kosars learned of the loss after returning from a wedding. they have a son in the Army in Germany.
Gen Dwight D Eisenhower does not believe the United States can economically match the Soviet Union division for division. Senate testimony by Gen Alfred M Gruenther, Eisenhower's chief of staff, before the Foreign Relations committee, discusses aims for a smaller active force with a strong reserve and cautions against full scale parity for economic reasons.
The University of Bridgeport capped its Wistaria weekend with a sunny pageant at Marina Circle drawing about 6,000 spectators. Dorothy Silverman was crowned 1952 Wistaria Queen with Elaine Kilby as maid of honor, amid remarks by UB President James Halsey.
Fire damaged railroad ties on Tracks 4 and 6 at the New Haven & Hartford station on Water Street. A cigarette started the blaze oil and grease on ties worsened the fire. Firefighters laid hundreds of feet of hose under the trestle and behind the waiting room as power was shut off to avoid electrocution. Mayor McLevy watched as Water Street and Stratford Avenue traffic was halted. recall issued at 7 41 from Box 315. Firemen remained over an hour.
Two days of White House negotiations between steel industry leaders and the United Steelworkers Union ended in a stalemate over wages and the union shop. President Truman urged action while the Wage Stabilization Board favored a 1 1/2 cent per hour raise and other benefits. The government faced uncertainty as the Supreme Court announced it would hear the steel seizure case, with conditions to change employment only by mutual consent. The industry pushed for concessions on prices and union shop, while the union demanded full Wage Board recommendations.
