A nine year old boy fell from the Pleasure Beach pier into Bridgeport harbor while fishing around 1 30 p m. George Taylor a dockworker nearby jumped in and kept the boy afloat until fishermen brought them to shore. John Hanna, 34, of Lake Katrine New York and Danbury, escaped from Danbury jail shortly after 8 30 tonight where he was held awaiting a traffic court appearance on three motor vehicle charges He had served five weeks of a six month sentence for probation violation in non support of his wife and three children He was rearrested Thursday on charges including reckless driving license suspension and destruction of private property Jailer Godfrey Stanton said Hanna controlled nightly cigarette orders for fellow inmates and gave the jailer an order tonight
The CIO Jewelry Workers Union Local 437 lost to Bruner-Ritter Inc in a National Labor Relations Board election by 222 to 121 after a prior consent vote. The garage site near 14 Silliman Avenue hosted the ballot amid charges of unfair labor practices. Union plans an appeal, alleging interference by the company. management calls the charges ridiculous.
The Fairfield Board of Education rejected an appeal by four bus operators and awarded a one year contract for the entire transportation system to Gray Line. Gray Line bid $413 per day, lower than the operators’ $485 request. The operators claimed unfair practices but were rebutted by School Superintendent Dr. Carlyle G. Hoyt.
Stanley Works union and management said maintenance staff will be recalled immediately to ready the plant for full operation by Tuesday. About 1,000 workers were affected by the nationwide walkout led by Local 2215 United Steelworkers CIO, following President Truman's steelwork request. Clemens J. Diemand, Stanley general manager, released the joint statement.
The body of 35 year old Charles Narbor of Naugatuck, missing since December 8, 1951, was found floating near shore in Lake Zoar by Harold Kuhn while fishing. Papers in his wallet identified the victim, as state police confirmed the discovery and noted Narbor's last known departure from home in good spirits.
Dorothy Silverman, 19, of Easton, a sophomore at the Weybster School of Secretarial Studies, is named 1952 Wistaria queen at the University of Bridgeport ball attended by about 650. She won over seven candidates and will be crowned tomorrow at Marina Park Circle.
Two long term inmates escaped from Osborn prison farm in Enfield during a TV viewing period. John Hydic, 38, Bridgeport, jailed 1 to 30 years for breaking and entering, and Armand Stovsell, 43, New York City, jailed 2 to 6 years for breaking and entering and auto theft. Hydie cited as third time offender. Stovall from Fairfield County sentenced June 6, 1950.
Lt Verne Goodwin, sentenced to two years for draft refusal, resigned from the Air Force under a new policy. Biggs AFB announced the action as Secretary Finletter retroactively applied the policy to cover the case. The resignation voids the court martial sentence but is to be under conditions other than honorable.
President Truman advances a steel peace plan as U S Steel and CIO workers halt a three day strike amid court battles. The industry demands assurances against future shutdowns and wage raises, while negotiations resume at the White House with CIO chief Philip Murray.
