66 Lost When Cruiser Rams Liner off Coast
AN ATLANTIC FORT May 1 Sixty six persons lost their lives when the steamship City of Athens bound from New York for Savannah was rammed and sunk by a French cruiser off the Delaware coast at 1 o clock this morning. The missing include ten men and two women passengers seven of twenty four United States Marines aboard fourteen of twenty French sailors and thirty three crew. Passengers were in berths when the warship struck and many perished trapped in their berths. Those who reached the deck plunged into the sea in thin clothing without life preservers. The French cruiser launched lifeboats and searched the waters as sixty eight were picked up and brought to port. Captain J Forward tried to avert panic but there was no time to launch boats. Wireless operator F J Doherty sent out a distress call but there was no answer. Doherty is believed drowned at his post. Harry A Wesley an New York oiler swam to an overturned life box and rescued four men. Captain Forn was injured among the saved.
