President seeks temporary extension of jobless benefits

President Eisenhower urged Congress to approve a temporary 50 percent extension of unemployment payments. The plan would add up to 13 weeks of benefits for workers exhausting regular state payments, at an estimated cost of 500 to 600 million dollars, to be repaid by the states. Senator Kennedy criticized the proposal as inadequate and pressed for a national minimum standard of 34 weeks.

A rented single engine plane ran out of gas off Hollywood Florida and sank into the Atlantic killing a Dania Florida couple their two small children and a female relative. Floyd Scites of Detroit was the sole survivor suffering shock and exposure. The group had rented the plane this morning and planned Nassau return work out of fuel led to a fatal plunge at about 7 15 p m local time.

Burglars Loot Leake and Nelson Offices on Ash Street

Burglars broke into the Leake and Nelson company offices at 235 Ash Street, smashing a rear window and forcing a door. Two large floor safes, about six feet tall, were ripped open with the combination locks knocked off, cash amount undetermined. Papers were scattered as workers had left by 5:15 p.m. The break was noticed shortly before 5:20 by watcher Joseph Kvaney Jr. The safes, 17 years old and bought during WWII, contained important documents. Detective Lombardi led the preliminary investigation with offiers Blanchard and Canell assisting.
