Snow and Wind Ravage Area Slowing Traffic and Power

Gale force winds and heavy snowfall disrupted the region with 12 to 14 inches in Ridgefield and 8 to 10 inches in West. Roads became slick and power lines fell in several streets while Bridgeport airport closed. One serious crash on the Merritt Parkway injured three. City plows and landing trucks battled the slick surfaces as temperatures dropped toward freezing. Continued in page four.

Milford Beach Section II Evacuated Temporarily

Gale force winds produced three to four foot tides flooding shores in Fairfield county towns. Milford Beach, Lordship in Stratford, Fairfield Beach and Compo Beach in Westport faced flooding with several Milford Beach evacuations. High tide at 11 29 reached shore. Pequonannock river overflowed into the New Haven railroad lot in Bridgeport, stranding cars.

Wide area snow paralyzes coast as power fails

A severe late winter storm blasted the Eastern Seaboard bringing up to two feet of wet snow and 75 mph winds. Millions lost power, trains and planes were delayed, and several deaths were attributed to the storm with widespread transportation disruptions across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and nearby areas.

Storm Strands 600 at Pa Turnpike Restaurant

A historic snowstorm leaves more than 600 people stranded at the Brandywine restaurant near Morgantown on the Pennsylvania turnpike. An elderly man, George Bliss, 61, of Rocky River, died after struggling through heavy drifts to reach shelter. City Allocates Airport Funds for Bridgeport and Danbury

U S Rep Albert Morano announced conditional federal allotments of 375000 for Bridgeport Municipal Airport to acquire land for a terminal area and construct a new terminal building plus a control tower. Danbury airport receives 25000 to acquire land for its northeast clear zone. City officials must secure CAA approval and matching local funds before use.

Rooster River flood program seeks more funds

Hartford March 20 William S Wise director of the State Water Resources commission told the Finance committee that additional bond funds are needed to advance small flood control projects including the Rooster River plan. He cited costs of 2 million for Rooster river, 5.86 million for Danbury, 3 million for Greenwich and a total state municipal burden of about 50 million over 16 years. Senator Shannon urged more bonds and action on the Rooster river project.

Fugitives Captured in New York After Fairfield Escape

Bridgeport detectives identify two escapees from Fairfield County jail who fled to New York City. Police nabbed them on 125th Street near Park Avenue after a tip. A stolen car linked to the pair was found abandoned in Brewster, New York.

Plane Skids Off Idlewild Runway No Injuries Reported

At Idlewild Airport the nosewheel of a Scandinavian Airlines DC 7 collapsed during takeoff and the plane skidded 100 feet off the runway in a snow storm. Fifty aboard escaped injury as 42 passengers and eight crew members were evacuated with no fire reported.

Unions to Merge Next Wednesday In Bridgeport

The Central Labor union AFL and Bridgeport Industrial Union council CIO plan a merger next Wednesday forming a city wide AFL CIO body. The combined 29,000 members will elect officers and delegates from the local unions with a formal announcement expected late tomorrow afternoon.

House votes to freeze farm price supports and planting

Washington AP reports the House approved a one year freeze on farm price supports and planting allowances. Supporters call it an anti recession measure. opponents failed to kill or limit it. Final tally 210 172 with party lines and regional splits. The measure heads to the Senate for compromise ahead of a likely presidential veto.
