Soviet Financed Dam To Transform Syria’s Euphrates Valley
In Syria the $600 million al Tabqa dam on the Euphrates is planned as the nation’s largest development project. The first stage aims to boost national income by $200 million, irrigate 1.5 million acres, create up to 181,000 jobs by 1990, and support a 800 kilowatt power plant. The project, funded mainly by Moscow, involves 53,000 to 60,000 farming families and a 400 square mile reservoir, with construction to begin early March marking Syria’s fifth-year Baath revolution.
