Fulbright Fails to Secure Pledge for Vietnam Consultations

In Washington Senator Fulbright pressed for a firm commitment from Secretary Rusk to consult the Foreign Relations Committee before sending more U S troops to Vietnam. Rusk offered only that he would consult Congress as in the past, prompting a televised two day hearing with no policy shifts.

Tragic Ontario Fire Claims Six Children And Wife

A 26 year old father screamed for help as a blaze engulfed his home in Toronto. Six children and his wife died in the fire while he survived with severe burns after neighbors and firefighters were unable to reach them. Police and fire officials said an electrical stove may have started the fire.

U.S. Shifts $450 Million In Gold to Back Dollar

The United States moved 450 million dollars in gold into the Exchange Stabilization Fund to back the dollar and calm markets. The transfer, part of a series since devaluation of the pound, raises the fund total to about 1.475 billion. Treasury aims to keep gold at 35 dollars an ounce while a House bill seeks to free gold reserves to defend the dollar.

Diocese Teachers Contract Negotiated for Agreement Vote

The Diocese of Bridgeport school office and the Bridgeport Education Association negotiated a contract for 120 high school teachers in the 175 student system. The proposal will be presented to members for approval at a meeting tomorrow at 7 30 p m in Norwalk Central Catholic High School. Peter J Lombardo, a negotiator and Central Catholic teacher, did not disclose contract details before the presentation. The new unit comprises 13 bargaining groups and the talks began four weeks ago.

Rockefeller weighs 1960 run decision by March 22

New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller said he would decide by March 22 whether to enter the Republican presidential race. He noted that date also determines whether he withdraws his Oregon primary ballot nomination. Rockefeller said a declaration later would be difficult and expressed readiness to serve if called. He praised Nixon’s NH win and predicted Nixon would take 70 to 74 percent, with Rockefeller’s write in 10 to 15 percent.

Christopher M. Donnelly, 14, of Fairfield Prep, earns the annual Post Publishing Young Columbus prize.
