Merit Board Revises Police Sergeant List

A city in Rock Island Illinois revises its police sergeant eligibility list after correcting examination scoring. Top four promotees are Breen, O Leary, Lynch, Casey with shifts among positions. Gustafson and Keeley drop to fifth and sixth. A 75 year old man, George Ostrom, was charged with murdering his wife Ella after claiming jealousy over her alleged infidelity. He beat her with a timber and choked her while she primped at a mirror.

Eleven year old girl undergoes major heart operation

In Cleveland at St. Luke's Hospital surgeons completed a nearly six hour operation on 11 year old Susan Kurtz to repair a faulty heart. Doctors reported her condition satisfactory tonight though a 48 hour critical period remains and final outcome depends on the next two days. The team, led by Dr. Frederick S. Cross, used blood transfusions and a heart lung machine during the procedure which addressed a hole between heart chambers, enlargement of the lung artery, and repairs from a previous operation.

House approves jail terms for suspended license drivers

In traffic court last night a tough stance led Judge Raymond B. Rubens to sentence five drivers on charges of operating a motor vehicle with suspended licenses. John Pickett, 45, received 30 days, 90 days, and six months on three counts after three arrests in 17 days. Other defendants faced fines or short jail terms when unable to pay. The session emphasized a new hard line for suspended-license offenses. Also reported: House approval of the Omnibus Rivers and Harbors Flood Control bill funding Bridgeport harbor work and related erosion projects with federal and local shares.

Hadley Building Sold for 864500 to Newton Residents

The Hadley building at 1138 1144 Main Street, owned by the late Archer C. Wheeler, was sold to Edith L. Grahm Esther J. Singer and Selma L. Gerier of Newton, Mass. The sale price appears on tax stamps as 864500. A 20 year lease keeps H L Green department store occupying the property. Mortgages totaling 361000 were issued to New England Mutual Life Insurance, and 450000 and 111000 deeds to the executors of the Wheeler estate.

Convicts Foiled In Brushy Mountain Breakout Bid

Heavily armed guards fired on a mass breakout attempt by about 300 rioting prisoners at Brushy Mountain State Prison in Tennessee. One prisoner, Fred Roberts, was wounded. the rest returned to cells after the clash. A five hour riot ended with tear gas. Warden Llewellyn agreed to hear grievances in a meeting with three convicts, drawn by Ray Lawson, to be scheduled tomorrow.

Explosion Injures Six In Carolina Town Saftly Explains No Radiation Threat

An Air Force B bomb accidentally dropped near Mars Bluff South Carolina caused a large crater, damaged six houses and a church, with six people injured including four children. Officials said no atomic explosion or radiation danger occurred though potential contamination was possible and could be cleaned by washing.

Civil Service Sets Conditional Griffenhagen Pay Hikes

The Civil Service commission relaxed its plan to grant Griffenhagen pay raises to city employees, voting last night to act next year only if economic factors warrant. The measure goes to the Common Council for approval or rejection next Monday after a closed session with Mayor Tedesco and officials.

Bridgeport Democrats endorse slate for town committee and delegates

The Bridgeport Democrats met in a Harmony Town committee session and unanimously endorsed candidates for the town committee and delegates to state, congressional and county conventions. Primary date set for April 24, with most endorsed candidates expected to run unopposed. Thirty candidates were named, replacing several incumbents due to moves. Eleventh district absent, will reconvene before March 20 to complete nominations.

Esso Lowers Home Heating Oil Prices in 18 States

Esso Standard Oil Co will cut prices of home heating oil in 18 eastern states and the District of Columbia effective tomorrow. Reductions range from two tenths to a half cent per gallon, covering No 2 oil for home furnaces and No 1 oil or kerosene. The 18 state area spans from Louisiana to Maine, with declines totaling 2.2 cents per gallon since January 1957.

Norwalk Boy Pays His Tax With Play Money

Hartfort dispatch reports four year old Bobby Fallon of Norwalk mailed 35 cents in play money as a tax payment to the Internal Revenue Service. The agency replied with a personal letter from District Director Harold R. All praising the boy for his interest and deeming him a good American.
