In a violent storm with rain thunder and heavy fog the tug Charles McWilliams captained by Elmer Sherman sank near Bridgeport harbor with five coal lighters in tow. All seven crew members escaped in lifeboats reaching the mainland safely. The ship’s dog Shep perished with the vessel. Rescue tugs and the harbor fleet eventually accounted for the missing lighter crews. The McWilliams was owned by Patrick McGee and Black Coal of Bridgeport.
