Premier Eduardo Dato is shot dead as his car departs the chamber in Madrid. The assassin was on a bicycle, and the chauffeur was killed. Dato, a conservative statesman, led Liberal Conservative forces and twice served as prime minister. Continued on Page Two.
Patrick J. Flanagan, Bridgeport police superintendent, named to a fifteen member committee at an interstate meeting in New York to plan coordination of police activity near New York City. Connecticut members include Flanagan and chiefs Philip Smith Haven W H Brennan Stamford William A Pennington Norwalk Garrett Farrell Hartford. Enright announced a May 2 to 7 national police cooperation meeting and standardization efforts. Public policy commissioners, railroad officials and citizens from New England states met at the state house to discuss railroads in the region amid a announced ten percent rate increase. Executives outlined the situation as presented to New England governors, with plans for an executive committee to draft a regional plan and possible public hearings after sessions.
Willis McCurdy of 547 First Avenue Astoria and Miss Alice Snowden his 9 year old secretary were found dead in Central Park near the Terrace Bridge. McCurdy reportedly shot Snowden then killed himself over her engagement to marry another man. Patrolman George Clinchy discovered the scene at 8 44 PM. McCurdy died from a pistol shot to the right temple Snowden from a pistol shot to the back of the hand. The couple were last seen together at a secluded park spot. Continued on Page Four.
Treasury Secretary Mellon releases a letter urging rigid government economy and rapid establishment of a national budget system. He warns of heavy March and next month expenditures, notes new short term certificates, and stresses the nation cannot afford excess spending while rebalancing taxes and surtaxes.
Petrograd workmen resist forced mobilization and clash with Soviet troops as Helsingfors dispatch to the London Times reports revolutionary gains. Krasnaya Gorka joins the revolutionaries, Kronstadt remains tense, and rail links north and south of Petrograd are reported cut amid advancing clashes and smoke over the city.
Reports from Berlin indicate Bolshevik leaders such as S.-lepin Trotzky remain the masters in Russia though factions clash to retain power. News quotes conflicting rumors about the Soviet government and the leadership amid the uprising, with officials still in control according to several signals.
Riga dispatch to the London Times says eight British ships took part in the Petrograd bombardment. A panic spread among Bel oops and Communists. The Oranienbaum garrison of five regiments deserted to the revolutionaries after the reshuffle of regiments and commissars. Two icebreakers were captured between Petrograd and Kronstadt. Bolshevists have sent agitators to Kronstadt to influence events there.
President Harding and his cabinet debated foreign policy options and domestic administrative organization in the first meeting of the new administration. The war department signaled no withdrawal of American troops on the Rhine while planning to push a Panama Canal treaty and Panamanian note developments.
Berlin dispatch reports German ambassadors Mayer at Paris Sthamer at London and Landsberg at Brussels ordered home to consult the foreign minister as Allied forces move across the Rhine. The Reichstag chancellor spoke solemnly on the crisis while Belgian French troops advance, with Düsseldorf occupied at six this morning.
A veteran of foreign wars alleged irregularities in the management of the 1,000 state aid fund for dependents of soldiers. Governor Lake will not consider the charges until specifics are provided. At a Warey meeting, officials expressed confidence in W. Parke S. handling of the local fund.
Hartford March 28 1921 Gov Lake issues a proclamation urging Connecticut residents to observe Good Friday as a day of fasting and prayer. He honors past leaders and calls for public supplication for wisdom and peace to heal war wounds and foster fraternal fellowship among all peoples.
Hartford dispatch reports two judges confirmed amid a bitter political feud. Joan Ik. Roach of New Haven named to the Supreme Court as associate justice, and John J. Walsh of Norwalk to the Superior Court for Fairfield County. Ballots favored Beach and Walsh by wide margins as Governor Luke suspended routines. Military committee approved a bill on hospital appointments, and the state board of control authorized per diem clerks and various appropriations while a sheep registration proposal faced tax implications.
Berlin papers discuss the break off of the Tondunions negotiations and warn that enforcing the borders violates Versailles. They urge composure as events unfold, flagging French moves to seize Germany’s coal and Ruhr region under penalties.
Berlin March 3 Chancellor Fehmenbach announced in the Reichstag that negotiations with the Allies have broken off. He said penalties are being imposed and any open discussion will wait for Foreign Minister Simons's return. The chancellor warned the Allies’ course will worsen European relations and hamper liquidation of the War.
Senate leader Delaney announced a favorable judiciary committee report on a bill trimming the New Milford town court judge's salary from 240 to 250 a year at the judge Hinsel George H. Jamson Less era. The measure was tabled for calendar. The session also heard Stratford issues with selectmen duties defined for direct primacy elections and a deputy Stratford town court salary rise from 350 to 800. The Senate restored rights of former Norwalk treasurer Selleck, and committee reports showed debate on license ballot repeal sections. Senate president pro tempore Hall returned to session after a southern trip.
