Bridgeport’s 1307 new draft registrants from the class of 1918 were allotted order numbers in a national drawing held at the Senate office building in Washington. An additional 280 men in Division 13 received numbers. officials expect several days to finalize the official order across six Bridgeport boards and Division 13.
Four persons were injured when two cars collided at the intersection of Penfield avenue and the Boston Post road in Fairfield at 4 30 this afternoon. Mrs Esther Brinkoff 32 and Miss Rebecca Cohen 21 of Brooklyn are in St Vincent s hospital with back and hip injuries. Robert Brinkoff driver of the Ford suffered a lacerated hand as the Ford was demolished. The Buick driven by A R Gerstell of Bridgeport came from Penfield avenue and struck the Ford. A baby girl in the Gerstell car sustained minor injuries treated by Dr William Donaldson. Motorcycle cop P J McGarry says both drivers were guilty of reckless driving.
Mrs Richard Stocum, 77, was hospitalized in Bridgeport after suffering a deep scalp laceration from a fall at her home on Brooks street. Dr Joseph J. Weegan of Emergency Hospital attended her, and the incident occurred a few hours before she was taken to hospital.
In Washington on June 27 the debate over Senator Fall’s amendment to extend the draft ages to 20 to 40 as part of the $12.0 billion army appropriation bill resumed. Senators Reed Lodge Cummins urged extension, while Baker and General March argued it unnecessary. Fall declared his effort futile as others anticipated rejection. leaders hoped for a vote and possible passage the next day.
The National War Data board assumed jurisdiction in a dispute involving Bridgeport Connecticut relief manufacturers and their striking employees. A panel including Taft Walsh and Osborne will visit Bridgeport next week to set hearings and direct workers to return to the shop at once.
Amsterdam dispatch dated June 24 reports Herman Kaisch of Koeinische Volksfeitung describing American troops in Renners wood north of Seicheprey holding a position despite heavy German assault. The two prisoners captured claim they fought hard after being told Germans torture prisoners, a claim Kaisch labels as base calumny.
The Bridgeport July Fourth parade will start at nine with the Fourth Infantry of State Guard leading. Representatives of foreign and native societies will draw lots for parade order, with units carrying white standards and only men marching, each with an American flag. The Spanish War veterans will lead all units. G A R members view from Seaside Park. The route runs from North avenue and Main street to Seaside Park, with ten bands already contracted for the Liberty division and a detailed order of formation listed for many fraternal groups.
Washington June 27 The Susan B Anthony amendment to the constitution failed to reach a vote after three hours of debate and parliamentary maneuvers. With Senator James of Kentucky absent the sponsors halted the resolution and promised to renew the fight next week. Opponents charged unfair advantages and filibustering and some supporters feared indefinite postponement.
Major General William Black discusses the American Engineer Corps at the American Institute of Electrical Engineers. He outlines a force of about 4,000 commissioned officers and 208,000 enlisted personnel and describes engineering efforts supporting wartime needs and training activities.
U S District Attorney Thomas J. Spellacy accepting the Democratic gubernatorial nomination in Hartford assails the Republican platform as a slap at the president and government. He backs woman suffrage, referendum on prohibition, and faults GOP loyalty, urging voters to consider Democratic record and loyalty. He cites Bridgeport king and Canaan backer as examples of Republican squabble.
Patrolman James Foley of the Brideport police department must pay alimony to Helen Foley and an additional $84 by a court order. Judge Warner found Foley in contempt for failing to obey alimony terms in a divorce case, with alimony set at $7 weekly and Mrs. Foley awarded $35 for counsel. Foley claims his wife deserted him after their February 14, 1904 marriage. she lives in North Canaan, maiden name Fitzgerald.
Washington June 27 A regiment of General Pershing's expeditionary forces in training in France will be sent to Italy as an advance guard for later reinforcement. Secretary Baker said Pershing will select the unit now in France and replace it with a U S regiment to fill the division. The move signals political unity with Italy and allied forces, with eventual Italian operations under General Foch's overall command.
Joseph Marshall, 46, remains in serious condition at Bridgeport hospital after a fellow prisoner, Stonewall Cotrew, attacked him in the North Avenue jail yesterday afternoon. Cotrew is under guard and to be arraigned in City Court for assault with attempt to kill. The weapon was a razor. officials say the men had a dispute but would not disclose details. Dr. Matthew Foley noted the neck wound was several inches long and nearly severed an artery.
Machinists in Bridgeport plan a mass meeting at the State Street Casino at 2 PM to hear Samuel Lavit of the International Association of Machinists report on wage negotiations with local gun makers. Lavit recently met with Taft-Walsh Labor policies board officials in Washington.
Miss Pauline Plotka was found not guilty by a jury in the killing of her sweetheart Dr. Anton Tindya, an interne from Cook County hospital, shot February to host.
