Byrd Flight Seen as Experiment in Radio Research
Washington June 22 The Atlantic flight of Commander Richard E Byrd aboard the America is viewed by scientists as a test of radio transmission. The plane carries a dedicated transmission set signaling its call letters every minute and a separate automatic loop repeats W T W to aid ship operators in locating a doomed craft. The gear, designed by Naval Research Laboratory staff, weighs 120 pounds and includes flame proof safety features. The main set operates over 250 to 760 miles by day with longer range at night, and an emergency underwater tail device would keep signaling if the tail remains afloat.
