A violent storm derailed a seven car Delaware Lackawanna and Western train near Rockport two miles west of Hackettstown. Of 182 passengers many were immigrants bound for homelands. 35 died and 35 more were injured as engines and coaches piled up and flames spread. Hospitals in Easton Morristown Dover treated the injured. deaths reported in Morristown and Dover with several unidentified victims among the deceased.
