Balloon Race Opens As US Banner Aims For Cup
The correspondent questioned Cap Honeywell who vowed to race for one hundred million Americans and bring the cup home to the United States. Winds shifted eastward after the start, sending several balloons toward Germany and possibly Russia, while the Uncle Sam and others headed east. Major Peck and Lieutenant Grey left with the 8-12 unit at 6:36, as the last balloon Heaperlo piloted by Casas launched at 6:40. Drizzling rain gave way to clear skies and scouting planes reported strong eastward currents from 1,500 to 30,000 feet with winds of 419 kilometres.
