An American transport fired five shots at a German submarine about 75 miles off the Jersey coast this morning with unknown results. The report came to shore tonight from the captain of a Brazilian steamship who brought the information.
Survivors of the American freighter Pinar Del Rio report a German submarine sank their ship 110 miles northeast of Cape Henry after a stern chase. They described a possible mother ship aiding the U-boat and said the sub signalled “Follow me” as the two vessels disappeared.
Washington June 10 forecast for South New England partly cloudy Tuesday and Wednesday warmer Wednesday East New York fair and warmer Tuesday and Wednesday Daily adm ban rises. High water and moon set times noted.
Report says four German submarines were sunk off the coast of France and one British cruiser destroyed as torpedo and shell fire rained around British vehicles. An ambulance driver from Berkshire Newtown, Herbert Partridge, recently returned home due to a double rupture sustained in the Red Cross service.
Three sailors killed in action were reported in today’s Marine casualty list. Names include Sergeant from Vallejo and others from Concord and Glen Ridge, with weapon and unit details unclear due to damaged OCR.
Wholesale sugar dealers report to New York that sinkings of the Eidsvold Texel and Carolina cost 54,000,000 pounds of sugar to America from tropical regions. The loss strains a National Food Administration plan to curb domestic supplies and fruit and vegetable stocks. Readjustments of Cuban and Porto Rican quotas are expected as refiners anticipate limited sugar next week. Bridgeport receives regular apportionments but deliveries lag as demand exceeds supply. Restrictions are likely to follow from Washington officials.
At the Board of Education meeting last night the study of German was eliminated as a high school subject in Bridgeport. The vote favored abolition but a rising vote showed a split, with five for and five against. President Havens cast the deciding vote in favor of elimination. Other notes include new hires and departures in the teaching staff, including Esther D. Pierson joining as a teacher at $1,100, and changes in the Marsh and Waldo V. Andrews positions and Kenneth Lundberg’s departure.
Fr P J McGivney reports America in the thick of World War I after two months touring French battle zones with Knights of Columbus official William Mulligan. He cites 12 survivors from 350 men of Company L from Meriden and Torrington in a Tour battlefield action and outlines plans for welfare work abroad including recreation huts and 2 million dollars in funding.
The Bridgeport Board of Education approved a flat $200 raise for all school staff including teachers, supervisors, and principals. Mayor Clifford E. B. Wilson urged a uniform increase, stressing minimal increments and praising the teaching force as many may be retained with the new pay hike.
War efforts prompt talk of women in public roles but Stratford Methodist Episcopal church rejects appointing Mrs E C Carpenter as pastoress during Rev B C Carpenter’s Y M C A secretary assignment abroad. Board discussions followed leak of plan and salary details. Continued on page 13.
Former Stratford representative Tyan L Morehouse will become night works manager at Housatonic Shipbuilding in Stratford. He, a drafted married father with dependent children, is among early younger lawyers moving into productive work to avoid Provost Marshal Crowder's order. Expected to start around July first, he is a Stratford political leader and active in clubs and fraternal groups, also serving as Stratford town prosecuting attorney.
Bridgeport faces a threatened coal famine as deliveries under federal schemes lag behind last year. J Pardy, local committee chair, says arrivals in June are uncertain, with July efforts underway to boost shipments. Consumers fear shortages despite promises from Washington, as access remains far below prior levels.

Washington June 10 secretary Baker said today more than 700000 American soldiers have been sent to France in a speech to French Blue Devils who came to the United States to aid the third Liberty loan campaign. Alpine Chasseurs known as Blue Devils were reviewed before leaving for Baltimore Newark New York and Boston en route back to France. Jusserand French ambassador attended along with representatives of the French high commission.
Owen Burns of the Board of Education reported at a board meeting that rumors about high school discipline and the senior class play circulated widely. Mayor Joinson noted concerns of impropriety while Superintendent Slawson defended the senior class production as excellent. Burns indicated a request for a copy of the play, and threats to withdraw children if conditions did not improve, with the superintendent attributing responsibility to the school principal.
