Sinking of the Herbert L. Pratt sparks naval chase near Delaware

Lewes Delaware June 3 The oil tank Herbert L Pratt bound from Mexico to Philadelphia was sunk at 4 pm after a German submarine fired on it near the Cape Henlopen lighthouse. Crew were rescued by the pilot boat Philadelphia and taken to a naval station. US warships pursued the submarine and fired at sea within minutes of the sinking. The town awoke to the alert with most residents unlikely to sleep tonight.
